New to the board but I need some advice on what to do. I'm an assistant coach on a pee wee team. I don't have a child on the team I just like teaching the game. Our head coach fails to plan for anything or teach individual fundamentals. I have tried to run drills and create practice plans to set us up to be successful but he chooses not to run them. We have horrible fundamentals and practice habits. We can't hold onto the ball or deliver a handoff because we never practice these things. We have a first string only, if someone gets hurt there is no backup plan we have to adjust during the game. On top of this we have no schedule of when games are going to be played and I'm just unbelievably frustrated with the entire experience. I've always been told support your head coach but if I was a parent I would be livid at the lack of technique we have 6 weeks in. I'm allowed to make almost zero impact on the team no matter what I try. It's getting to be a waste of my time and I don't want to desert the kids. What do I do to get this straightened out? We are 1-3 and should be 4-0. There is an executive director of the league but he and the coach have worked together for 15 years. I don't think that's the right tree to bark up. I've talked to the coach in every way I can think of and it's just not working. any advice would be helpful.

Talk to the head high school coach and see if he and some of the assistants would be willing to stop by a practice give some pointers or hold a clinic for the youth coaches. As a HC I feel a well run feeder program makes things easier as kids get to middle school and high school.

You need to engage the HC and ask him what motivates him to NOT work on those fundamental things. What logical sense does it make to ignore fundamentals in his mind. Once you can figure out WHY he approaches things the way he does, you can figure out a plan to change his mind.

I wouldn't waste my time, then. Just walk away. Sometimes that is the only answer.

Finsh the season and never work with that coach again. Your not gonna change him. Do the best you can with what you got. Do not leave the kids. I coach youth also and because of the reasons you describe I wont coach unless Im the head coach. To many youth daddys that dont know whats going on.

A lot of good advice. I couldn't walk away from the kids, they haven't done anything wrong. I will just keep trying to coach them and the coach up.

Finish the season and walk.
I only say this because your HC and the Director have been working together for 15 years so in my mind neither has a clue.
Is there another org you can hook up with? Since you are seeing a very common problem with youth teams and truly want to fix it, may as well do good somewhere else where you can be heard.
Probably too late to make a difference now…which is unfortunate. In the mean time do whatever you can for as many of the kids as you can.

I would tell the guy what i think we can do to improve. Not right before practice. Cuss and discuss. If he cant handle a discussion, so be it. Pick a couple things your sure of and teach it. If he really doesnt know jack, then pick a skill you know how to improve and ask him why not? Push him. F it. He needs to get a clue. If you sit back, then you're part of the apathy.
