How many coaches does your program have at the varsity, JV, and freshmen level? Thoughts on how many is too many or too few?

I have been at places where there were 3 varsity, 2 jv, 2 soph and 2 freshman. once place I was at had head coaches for each level. head high school coach, head jv coach, head soph coach and head freshman coach with each coach having 4 to 8 coaches underneath him. I was on a varsity staff where it was like a board meeting we had 7 on each side of the ball qb coach, rb coach, 3 oline (1 was tight ends) and 2 wr coaches. on defense we had a 2 D LINE ends/tackle, 3 lber coaches a safeties coach and corners coach.

We are a 1500 student high school. We two platoon and so have a split staff and run a two part practice schedule with the JV's going thru the same drills as the varsity, only before or afterwards depending on if we go O or D varsity first. Defensive staff = DC (DB's)-Paid Dline---volunteer ILB's---Paid OLB's--volunteer DB's/Special Teams Co-ordinator- volunteer Offensive staff= Head Coach ( OC) Paid Oline ---Paid RB's (Strength)-Paid WR- paid Frosh Staff= Frosh HC,WR/LB's-Paid DB's/RB's- Volunteer Oline/Dline-Volunteer We are blessed to have a large number of volunteers that know what they're doing and a booster club that supports us and gets the volunteers some beer money for their time. Our equipment manager is a volunteer and our trainer is paid. That makes a staff of 14. Friday nights everyone has a job to do.

We have 7 total for 9-12...would like to get up to 10 at least. We want ideally
Varsity: Head Coach, OC, DC, two position assistants on each side. JV: Head Coach/Assistant Frosh: Head Coach/Assistant

Just curious, because this season I joined a staff with 10 varsity coaches, 6 JV coaches, and 5 freshman coaches. It seems like a lot of guys, but somehow it works very well. Does anyone have experience with or pearls of wisdom about programs this large?

typically, i've been on staffs where we had 6 offensive assistant coaches / 6 defensive assistant coaches. we coached both jv & varsity. there were 4 to 5 freshmen coaches that would assist with varsity practice & on game nights. everyone coached the subvarsity in some capacity -- i.e. the qb's coach may be the varsity OC but still coached the jv qb's during games while the rec's coach may be the 'oc' for the JV games & called the plays.
currently, at a smaller school. we have 4 offensive coaches & 4 defensive coaches. The HC coaches a position on the offense. we all coach the varsity, jv, & freshmen. we have 3 coaches for our 4 middle school teams (7a/7b, 8a/8b) and 2 high school coaches go down during the 8th grade athletic period to help coach those guys for at least 30-45 minutes each day.

1,000 enrollment.
HC/OC/Qbs DC/DBs/WRs DEs/RBs OL LBs/OL DTs/OL WRs/LBs so 7 total. JV staff has 6 total
Last place i worked at had 2 coaches at each position. All did jv/varsity
i dont know what too many would be. i would imagine you need roles. and most importantly, you gotta follow the ELE rule.

I'm the HC at a University in England, my staff looks like this (no one gets paid)
HC OC DC QB (Done by OC) WR RB OL DL LB(Done dy DC) DB's
S&C
+9 unqualified assistants that we're grooming into positions
I'm really happy with the number of guys I've got this season. I'm impressed that you guys have such small staff numbers but most of my guys have very little to no coaching experience and only limited football experience at all.
