Had one of my best olinemen get hurt the other night in a game. Thought he broke his finger, wrapped it up and went back on the field to finish the 4th quarter.
He goes to the doctor this week, they give him an mri, and he has ruptured his tendon in his ring finger. Dr. is saying it is "jersey finger" and wants him to have surgery right away and is saying he will be out a few months. I am by no means a doctor, but was curious if anyone has ever heard of a player playing through this using a hard cast, or a club, and being okay and getting the surgery done later. I would not ask except this kid was getting looks from junior colleges and smaller div 3 schools, and could of had his schooling paid for.

I'd get a second opinion from a doctor who is familiar with athletic injuries.

If it's a complete rupture I believe that surgery is needed fairly quickly but if it's a partial tear then a lot of the time surgery isn't needed and it can be splinted up.

I had a similar injury to my thumb in college and a buddy of mine did, too. I had partial tore a tendon in my thumb, and thumb and was able to play with a club on my right hand. (I was a center and am right handed. I had to learn to snap with my left.) Our RT completely ruptured his tendon and was done for the year. He had surgery, screws, and everything in his thumb.
