For every kid you pump up with this kind of talk, there are two others who are now scared to death. You have now heightened their fear of failure, which causes a lot of kids to seize right up. Your hard core competitors will figure out how important the game is all by themselves. The other kids just need to stay within themselves, and execute the way they have been taught all year. I always tell kids that after the first hit, it's another football game. Let's just go do what we do, i.e. rip it up.

We played at a place that does not have water for the visiting team. I went off on a tangent the other day about how their operation is a bunch of slappys. That was the wrong thing to do as it hurt us. The kids were less focussed as I think they did not understand that I was talking about the ineptness and total lack of professionalism of the facilities. Gotta be careful what you say.

I've never been one to really hype a single game, so I don't have much experience with this, but I think it would be really hard to get the team up and focused for the next game if they happen to lose the one "that matters."

Maybe he does this every game? If so, the team may be used to his weekly Holtzian histrionics.

That's exactly what I think. Even if they win I can see a letdown the next week.

Actually, I've seen that too fantom. I coached for a program that had lost 24 straight games before I arrived and then we lost the first two of that season before getting a win. Instead of using the win to fuel the fire and further motivate...the team had a big sense of satisfaction that they ended the streak and we let a couple teams we were better than beat us. Only team we beat the rest of the way was a first-year program.

We try not to hype any single game too much. Or even the opponent at all. Our HC really emphasizes playing our game. Its one of those "Our toughest opponent is ourselves" kind of things.
