OK, probably a dumb topic, but I know when I go to a clinic I try to write down EVERYTHING the speaker is saying and the result is a jumbled mass or words, terms, and ideas that I have a hard time making out later.
Do any of you guys have a "system" for taking clinic notes? How do you focus in on the important stuff?

I bring a tape recorder, and tape each topic the coaches I listen to. I then go abck and listen to them and write down the key ideas. Tape recording clinic talks is normally okay it's the video taping the lectures that is not allowed.

Depends what is being discussed, and who is speaking. I find most speakers, even informative ones, have not planned their talks all that well, so this makes things a bit difficult. For most Xs and Os discussions I think it's best to write down as much of what they say and draw out diagrams because these tend to throw the most information at you in the quickest period of time. My initial notes usually look like a mess but then I will try to recopy and clean them up within 24 hours, hopefully before I've forgotten what the notes mean.
For more general clinic talks I mostly just try to listen and jot down anything of use or that strikes me (i.e. talks on gameplanning, or motivation, or preparation, or building a team, etc versus some stunt out of a 3-3 stack look). If I'm really gungho about a particular speaker or I know I'll be unfamiliar with something I try to do a little research ahead of time--I find if I know zero about the area a coach is speaking about their clinic talk on some specific thing just passes me by. If it's some kind of zone blocking technique I probably won't understand it if I don't even know how zone blocking works; if it's a zone-blitz I probably won't appreciate it if I don't understand the overall principles of the 4-3 or 3-4 or whatnot that it is being shown from; etc. I don't need to know it beforehand but it's tough to catch the details if you don't know anything about that area. Again this is only when I get a list of general topics and there are some that particularly interest me.

We try to have two of us go into each session whenever possible. That way one guy is the "note" guy - he writes down all the important information. The other coach is the "play" guy - he draws up all of the diagrams. We also give the play guy the paper with a football field already lined up on it, and a small stencil for the X's and O's.
I have also found out, just like Spread-attack has stated, that these guys try to get so much information out in such a little time, that at times it is kind of disorganized. So, I usually just ask the coach during the water break, or after the class, if I can send him an self- addressed envelope, so he can mail me his notes or diagrams. Some of the coaches will even give out an E-mail address beforehand, just for these reasons.
I have found that most of these coaches have been nothing but nice to me, and really willing to help you out.

I use what is called a word diagram. I select the topic, put that in the middle of the page and then draw lines out from it. it sort of looks like a spider webb when I am done. write down key words. learned it from a psychologist friend of mine.

Take notes just like you did in college when the prof was lecturing.

and THIS is why I sell my clinic video dvds. Folks want to attend and participate in a clinic, not just take notes. my experience anyhow.

With speakers that use power point I have found many of them will give a copy right on the spot using my falsh drive. Some say no, but most are pretty helpful.
