We played our first game yesterday. I didn't really know what to expect. We hadn't really done any full live hitting prior to the game - didn't have any scrimmages and very little hitting in practice. We didn't do a single tackling drill where we took players to the ground. Our numbers are low (we suited 18 for the game) so our head coach is very wary about potentially getting players injured in practice.
We saw our opponent on scouting video, so I knew they weren't very good, but they did defeat their first opponent 31-8, so they weren't terrible. I wasn't sure we were any good, so I just didn't know what to expect.
Anyway, we returned the opening kickoff for a TD and they just couldn't keep up with our athletes in space. It was 23-0 midway through the first quarter. Our biggest problem was keeping out of mercy rules (which kick in at 28 points). The Head Coach got very upset when the DC, who is also our Assoc President, sub all our MPPs on defense and they scored a couple times. Despite the best efforts of the rest of the staff, we went into mercy rules mid-third quarter and after our last score we were up 53-14. Thankfully they scored on a long pass very near the end of the game (which also upset the header pretty good), to make a final score of 53-22.
I'm still not sure we're any good. That had to be the least fulfilling big win I've ever been a part of.

Our 5th graders lost 14-12 and our 6th graders tied 6-6.
Fifth grade game...our backs ran hard but our line play was very poor...double teams didn't move anyone and our circle runners were too slow getting to the hole on our off-tackle power play. QB made some mental mistakes like opening the wrong way on counter more than once.
6th grade game, our line play was outstanding but backs were tentative and didn't really hit the holes hard...too much dancing around. So basically, if we let our 5th grades backs run behind our 6th grade line, we should be pretty good!
We made a nice adjustment to our power play. They were running a 4-4 with a DT in a 2 tech and a DE in a 6 tech. We usually run power off-tackle but started running power off-tight end (double the 6-tech withthe TE and WB and used the FB to kick out the playside corner). Broke a nice 65-yard TD run on one and had good yardage on the others. We were also getting good yardage on trap. Our kick-out blocks were good and our fullback ran hard.
Defensively, we had some real problems with our ends and corners. Our ends were just not getting upfield and their backs got to the edge several times for big yardage. When we finally got our ends upfield to turn the play back in, our corners were not filling hard. We are going to do a lot of perimeter run drill this week with the ends and corners.
We felt pretty good about the game...team we played had 30+ sixth graders while we only have 9 and had to play our better 5th graders up. In the 5th grade game, they played a bunch of their 6th graders who hadn't played much in the 6th grade game and we only played 5th graders. So, even though we didn't get a win Saturday, we played competitively against a team with bigger, older, and faster athletes.

Won 52-0. Line played better than in previous scrimmages. Tough game up next. Thanks to all the coaches here on this forum that helped this off season. Hope to return some sort of favor, in this lifetime or the next. lol

We won our game 35-6 against a very poorly coached team. It got out of hand very early we scored on the third play of the game then got the onside kick and scored two plays later and got the kick again and scored, next thing I know we are up 21-0 with two minutes left in the first quarter. We had 9 kids carry the ball though and they scored with the majority of our MMP in the game but couldn't move it with our starting D in.

Hi Guys,
We had the first game of the season this weekend. We won 30-6. We have a 21 point mercy rule starting backfield can't play on off. when you are beating your opp. by 21 points. We had went up 22-0 in the 1st quarter. Sat our starters after that and ran dive the rest of the game.
This is my first year as a real head coach and I just wanted to thank everyone thats responded to any of my post and answered any of my questions.
Cheers.
