Sometimes we get caught up in the day to day grind/process of the season, our lives outside football, our other jobs-teaching/whatever and the goals are out there and you are driving yourself and your team towards them so you don't really take the time or even allow yourself some reflection. Then comes that moment where you go "ahhh, man I really love this"
Besides the day to day interactions with the kids where they constantly surprise you with something good or bad, or with an unexpected thanks, I find these moments in a more "organic" way I guess.
Usually it is at a JV game when at the part of the season where the JV games get started around the time the sunsets start, things are cooling off a bit, school is in full swing, and the rigors of the routine are adjusted to. You see some JV kids that are close to being moved up start to turn that light on and the team has a good night, you can tell it is going to be a good night even in pregame. Men, for me that is when it really hits me. I love this game.

Hits me when I see a couple of young (and I mean 2 Freshman and 1 Soph) in a varsity scrimmage turn that light on and do what I have been coaching them to do for the last couple of weeks...that is a what happened today.

The most recent ah ha moment I had was a couple of weeks ago. I am coaching youth ball so we are already in week two of our games. I was having a really crappy day and I got our to the practice field and it was like wow you know what just being out here makes me happy.

Just walking on the field to work a game does it for me. Every game, every level.
There's no place I'd rather be.

Magic moments. It's after the game, the band is finishing their last number and leaving the stands, the stands are almost empty save a few folks laughing and talking big, you've given your team talk and their walking to the field house. I go sit on the bench and look up at the scoreboard and smile. There's a light mist beginning to rise off the field and a cool breeze beginning to blow in my face. My friend, it doesn't get much better than that in this life. OJW

The calm before the storm during pregame is one of my favorite parts of the season. This is something people that never played ball know nothing about. Also saw a former player at Subway today. He was a linebacker on an undefeated jv team 6 years ago. He told me that him and other guys still get together and talk about that season. Knowing that those guys will have lifelong memories makes all of the hard work worth it.

We dont have a stadium or floodlights (daytime matches) or even supporters (normally 10-15 family members).
What makes me realise it is the changing room before we take the field. We do our team talk and final minutes in a small changing room. We purposely use a small changing room rather than go outside to do it as it adds to the atmoshpere. We even have guys standing on benches to make room. Then we listen to audio.
Those 5 mins right there. Really makes it worthwhile being in the thick of it with the anticipation looking around at all the players prepared and ready to go represent their college.
