Prince Fielder has said that the reason that he didn't play HS football was because he didn't want them to put his weight in the program. My thinking is, for a stud like that I have no problem lying in the program: "No problem, Prince. What do you want to weigh?". Thoughts?

He doesn't play because what it says in program that how many people read-care about?
And obviously his weight is too much or he wouldn't care?
Doesn't sound like a "stud" to me - just a big body not willing to do what it takes to be a good Football player.
What else would he not want to do?
You can win with "studs" like that - but you can lose with them too,
I may be wrong but I have always tried to surround myself with people to whom Football meant something.
And that wasn't just what they could "get" out of it.

My thoughts are that I don't believe this is the reason Prince Fielder did not play HS football... but it makes for an interesting little sound bite 10 years later.

If that's really it, that he's sensitive about his weight, I have no problem with changing his weight in the program.

Years ago when John Kruk (now ESPN Baseball analyst) was still playing MLB, some talking head asked him:
"How can you be so overweight, drink and smoke, and be a professional athlete?"
His response:
"I'm not an athlete, I'm a Baseball player."

I thought the Kruk comment was funny.
My answer to this would be the same. "What do you want to weigh?" Who cares if it is a little off?

If he's a baseball player I guess he has some athleticism for a three hundred pounder. We often complain about kids who specialize in other sports and won't play football. Here's a guy who is primarily a baseball player- who's future is in baseball-but is willing to play. Damn right I'll take him. Let me emphasize again that this is pretty hypothetical because I don't believe his story either.

I don't believe that's his reason, because it sounds more like an excuse...probably made up after the fact. Reminds me of the kid who told me today that he wasn't playing this year because he's "training for next year or high school". Like the guy who talks about how good he could've been if _________ hadn't stopped him.
This guy comes to mind...

1. I don't believe it. 2. If a player came to me and said "coach I embarassed about my weight, can you make it a little less in the program?" I would say (like Tog) what do you want it to say, and make it work.

I would say (like Tog) what do you want it to say, and make it work. And that would help him - how? Get him to play when he's overweight, out of shape, hasn't done what needs to be best he can to help Team? And how would other kids on Team feel when they see you fudging (lying?) about some other kid? What else you gonna let him get away with because you think he's a "stud" who will help you win? My first coaching job (assistant) we had similar situation. That "special" player destroyed Morale, we went 3-6. I vowed to myself - if I'm ever head coach - that won't happen. Besides, aren't we trying to to teach Commitment, Self-Discipline, Team work? You must be willing to lose in order to have discipline, and you most certainly will lose if you don't.

I have no problem with lying about any of their weights. Then why bother to weigh them at all? I've seen rosters without heights, weights, or both. fantom, you don't care then what kind of shape they report in?

He was embarrassed about how much he weighs. You don't have any linemen who don't look great with their shirts off?

You don't have any linemen who don't look great with their shirts off? Only the ones who can't play or if they have to we're going to lose - the "Weakest Links." And it doesn't have to be "great" - just like somebody who cares enough about himself and Team to do what is necessary to be best he can be. I know success you've had so your way obviously works very well. Therefore I've said my piece on this issue, going to have to bow out of discussion with all due respect.

Ehh, it's a hypothetical anyway. I agree that this was an excuse from a guyy who never really wanted to play football (and with Fielder coming up for free agency it's hard to argue with his choice). Just something to talk about since I'm not coaching this year and I'm getting bored.

I'm not coaching this year Sorry to hear that - what happened? Resigned. Too old to put up with administrative stupidity especially since I'm retired and this is essentially a hobby. I'll take the season off and hook up somewhere next year.

I can relate to that - part of reason despite some success I'm on my sixth different head coaching job. Got new superintendent and AD within last year so countdown is on but there won't be a seventh. I'll go be assistant 2nd String Freshman RG coach somewhere or a Wal-Mart greeter. Enjoy your fall off, hope you find a place that can use your talents-you'll enjoy coaching at next year. Problem is, "administrative stupidity" is rampant.
