Coaches, Longtime Wingt T coach just learning spread. What periods are a must have in the practice plan? For example we always had shoulder skills in the wingt t plan. Any ideas? Thanks, JWH

Must have a mesh period between the QB's and RB, working on the reach, ride, and decide when running the Zone Raed.

We work our practices something like this:
Run Individual - 15 min - RB/QB: ball handling (with DE reads), OL: blocking skills, WR - run blocking (base offside)
Inside Run - 20 min - RB/QB/OL: All runs vs. Odd/even fronts, WR - run blocking (feather onside)
Pass Individual - 20 min - RB: pass blocking, QB: footwork/mechanics, WR: routes mechanics/releases (press) OL: pass blocking technique
Pass Group - 20 min - RB/QB/WR: routes on air/7-on-7, OL: pass blocking schemes
Pass Team - 10 min - Blitz pickup live
Situation Offense - 10 minutes - Goalline, 3rd & short, 3rd & long, etc.
Team - 30 min - vs. Scout, scripted.

I strongly feel that you must throw patterns on air and 7 on 7 for 20 to 30 minutes every day.

One of the nice thing about the Spread is that you can say to your skill guys, do youn want to stay after practice for 10-15 minutes and throw? I have found most of our guys say yes!

The way our practices our set up we are throwing sometimes up to 40 min a day. We split our QB's up and 1/2 work mesh with RB's and 1/2 throw routes with the WR's for 10 min. Then we usually run what we call a perimeter drill for 15 minutes. During this time we work all our quick game, screens etc.. and then we throw 7 on 7 for 15 min.

Personally, I don't like practicing O and D on the same day and squeezing practice. It messes with both offensive and defensive plans. I have found we are more efficient and the continuity is better if we use practices for one or the other. If I had to use 75 minutes, then rather than try to cram a full practice into one day, I would use my same basic plan but just spread the plan over 2 days. I would probably work it so the O-line got individual each day and that the WR/QB's could run routes and catch the ball each day.

We only get 45 minutes for O everyday.
Indy - 15 minutes
Group - Pass Skell/Inside Run 15 minutes
Team - 15 minutes
Generally this is what we do.

I think you need to have a screen period in your practices especially with the spread offense

We always do the following after individual period:
10 min - mesh with RB (Zone read, counter, option, etc) 15 min - screen game (RB/WR only) 20 min - pass hull vs secondary 15 min - inside run hull vs front 7 20 min - team
One other thing, in regards to o-line work, I have my o-line coach go over every possible box alignment out there. Our lineman will know every adjustment to every alignment.
During the skill position periods, the OL-DL will work together at different stages.

Bronk---do you ever include your lineman in the screen period? Blocking someone down the field and in space is tough on the big eaters.

Anyone have trouble getting a look out of the scout defense during the screen period? Our scout DL always play the play since they know a screen is coming.

Regarding screen period: (This really helps if you are crunched for time)
Our screen period is done during a 10 min. special team period in the middle of practice. While my assistants are running a special team drill, I have the OL/RB/QB with me running screens for 10 min. (on air). You can then script screens into your Team period. This way, everyone is busy doing something and you're getting some quality reps in as well.
