As the OP -
I think I can say that this is definitely linked to all the yearly threads on CoachHuey re "How do you get Commitment", "Change Off-Season Culture", or similar topics.

We do not start until August 13th. First game is the weekend of Labor Day. From the looks of it, most of you guys have more time then we do to prepare for the first game. We feel that we are rushed to get it all in. We have 3 scrimmages in between that time as well. I am sure that there is a happy medium somewhere between starting too early and what we feel in starting too late.

Everyone on here starts well before the state of Oregon. Official practice starts on Aug. 22nd, but can not be in Full pads till Aug 24th. Everyones first game is Sept. 2nd and every level is done at the latest of Dec. 11th this year.
Oregon is probably one of the most laid back states when it comes to sports, which makes it difficult to have kids doing stuff year round. I would say 90% of all FB players play 2 sports, and 50% play 3 sports in Oregon. When sumemer comes the kids have a few options: A) Play summer Basketball games, B) play Baseball games or C) Go bust your butt in the weight room for the football staff. Let me tell you which one the kids pick the least! No other sports coaches in Oregon mandate the weight room for the most part.
It is easy for kids to go play basketball and baseball games, but it is hard work to lift and run in the summer. Football staff are the hard @$$es and kids will take the easy way if allowed at home.
That is why you are starting to see programs in Oregon that have 1000 or more students only be able to field a Varsity and Frosh/Soph team.

Let me tell you which one the kids pick the least! No other sports coaches in Oregon mandate the weight room for the most part. Our kids do both. Workouts are at 7:30 AM, and they play summer baseball/basketball in the afternoons. But then, this is Alabama, and football is king. Sounds like you have a culture problem out there. In Alabama we started August 1st. 3 weeks until the jamboree, 4 weeks until game 1. I believe that's the right amount of practice time before the first game. With 10 weeks of regular season and a potential of 5 weeks of playoffs if you make it to the state championship game, the number of regular season games or the playoff format would have to be changed to prevent things from going right up until Christmas if we were to start later. I can't say I'd be opposed to starting later per se. However, I was pretty fired up to start practice this week, and so were our kids!

Our school district has finals end before christmas, I mean winter break. So we start school 2 weeks early and have only 2 days of double sessions.
Almost everyone else we play starts school 1-2 weeks later and gets those double session days.
Starts Wed. 8/10 3 days no pads, Players must have 12 days of practice to play first game. No scrimmage First game 8/26 9 week regular season State Championship on thanksgiving weekend.

We start Aug 30th and our first game is Sept 24th. We play an 8 game season with a chance for a one game playoff. It happens way too fast. I can't think of any one sport kids in our program, most play three. We have 85-90 kids in the program and have had 13 D-1 A or AA kids in the past five years. Very different model, but it works.

In Washington State we start August 17th this year. First game is Labor Day weekend (Sept. 2nd). Nine week regular season. One week of district crossovers. Four weeks of playoffs, finished up first weekend in December. This puts our season at a max of 15.5 weeks. We don't start school until the Wednesday after Labor Day.

I still think the bigger issue is that one school district has 9 DAYS OF INSERVICE!!!!!!

Here in MN we started last Monday, 3 days without pads, 2 days in pads, no cantact allowed. Today 8-22 is the 1st day of contact. Scrimmages agianst outside competition can start on Saturday of this week. 1st games are allowed the Thursday of labor day weekend. Season ends on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. Teams can play up to 14 games if they are in a smaller class and make it all the way to the state title game. In the playoffs there is one round with short turnaround. The last regular season games are played in Week 8 on a Wed night.(teachers convention held Thursday and Friday) 1st round of playoffs is Tuesday after the Wed game with the next game being on Saturday.

Up north if a team goes far enough, they do bump into basketball season...but more importantly...HOCKEY SEASON!
