We are going to be hosting a free youth coaches clinic next Saturday. It is scheduled to go from 9-12. Any ideas on how to best use this time? Have any of you done something like this before?
One hour of offense? One hour of defense? Half an hour break? Half an hour strength and conditioning?

Don't overemphasize the Xs and Os. Give them lots of technique plus practice organization. If your youth league is connected to the HS program- if they run the same O and D- you may spend more time on Xs and Os. Maybe a good topic would what to leave in and what to leave out from your system.

I think if you filled up all 3 hours just on tackling technique that could possibly be better than anything else combined.
Basic O-line steps might be next on the list.

we did a youth coach's clinic years ago. really emphasize the fundamentals and drills, drills, drills. Unless you are in a very structured youth football area, most of the youth coaches will want to run their own Xs and Os anyway.

I helped with a camp for our youth league this past week, I took one big thing away from it, our youth coaches have no clue. They spent more time making 8 year olds do up downs than they did teaching. Technique and how to teach it is important with youth coaches

Thanks for the responses. I was going to focus on our quick passing game and run game, but am on board with you guys. The focus will now be practice organization, how we use Google Docs, and fundamentals.

We do a dual thing with our youth league. During February & March, we do a weekly coaches clinic and introduce/refresh the x's and o's of our base package, defense base packages, philosophy, etc. In these meetings we also go through our daily and weekly drills that we do at the highschool and what drills are appropriate for their level.
Now for the hard part is when they start their preseason minicamps the high school coaches have to make an effort to be out their at least for a day or two to make sure their are setting up drills properly, implementing and teaching correctly, etc. It is a necessary thing if you want to have a great relationship from the highschool and youth levels

I put it there because I wanted high school coaches to see it and respond. However, I'm glad it was moved here. Do you think showing them how Google Docs and Hudl could benefit their organizations would be good?

Coach,
First off- 1/2 hour break? you lose guys there 5 minutes max between the 2 sessions Hudl for what they need- all about priorities- if you only have 170 minutes, is that worthy of the time? I would ask if they film games first IF they do, ask if anyone is willing to upload it to Hudl and do some editing IF you find someone to do that, THEN have a seperate session with those guys We use Hudl and are a BIG supporter of it, however it wouldnt be what Im investing time in if I only have 170 minutes Google docs and Hudl- will get some oohs and aahs- but most won't bother with it. When I do my 6 hour clinics- I go 100 mph with 5 minute breaks and I do have time to talk Hudl- about 15 minutes worth. If I had 3 hours, no

You're right Dave. Hudl is a waste of time, however I think they can benefit from Google Docs. It will allow those coaches to collaborate throughout the day on schedules, scripts, etc. Thanks for the advice.

What is it you do with google docs? Post practice schedules for assistants to see? Yes, I'm not the head coach but we put all schedules, scripts, etc on there so they can be accessed and manipulated from anywhere. I would think it would come in very handy for youth coaches that work in different places.

Handy? Sure, but so is an excel spread sheet with a practice plan that gets emailed around.
I wouldn't waste time on Google Docs. That is SO far down the priority list of what most youth coaches need...

I'm doing a clinic tomorrow for about 10 youth coaches in our organization.
We have 3 hours.
This is how I'm going to run it:
First part (classroom) 1 hour - overall program philosophy and expectations for coaches - Practice schedule - Offensive Playbook - Defensive Playbook
Second part (practical) 2 hours - stance - blocking progressions - center-QB exchange (we use a 2-handed flip snap) - Double Wing linemen skills - Double Wing basic series (power, trap, counter, criss cross, belly, rocket) - tackling - Defensive alignment (Wide Tackle 6) - Reads and Run fits

I think that's useful if the youth programs are running your offense and defense. Are they? In my experience, most youth coaches just ran whatever they want.

I go over the playbooks in depth and then each coach gets a video copy of the playbook (includes cutups).
