Can you tell? I think I can, but in some cases I am wrong.
I watch a lot of film and I can watch a team and know the speed they are playing at. The arguement seems to be that you cannot tell someones actually speed until you see them live. Is this true?
A fast guy is a fast guy. Watch him run away from everyone and break the angle of the pursuers. That is enough to say he is fast. Watching the feet and punch of the line play on film is to know that a particular player on the line "gets it going".
In rare cases have I thought a player to be average on film and then be a lot better in person. Maybe the guy just stepped it up that night?
Thoughts?

I have always been told, and agree that if a player looks fast on film then he is really fast live. When I watch video you can tell who the fast guys are are but it helps to know the relative speed of the team they are playing too. For example there is one good team in our conference who never seems to have speed. They win, but the plod along. Gauging speed vs this team is tough b/c everyone looks fast.

Find out the frames per second of the video camera. Count frames on any run and divide byy the FPS rate of the camera. That gives you something quantifiable (i.e. "the kids runs a 4.6"). Next thing is what he does with whatever he's got.

When the team is clear and the ball carrier is blurry, then you KNOW he's fast....LOL I've always had trouble gauging individual speed and more importantly quickness unless its in the open field against angles. When I look at a defense I look for team speed, how many hats are around the ball each time?

I'll add to that, the reason for difficulty is that there is normal fast, small guy fast (fast arms/shorter strides), and smooth fast, athlete thats fast but doesn't look like he's going 100%, like Vince Young-smooth, he doesn't look fast/quick until you notice all the other guys diving at air.

I agree with that last one JH. We have a dude that you would swear isn't moving......then he is smoking by everyone on the field. EVERYONE. And he was a junior last fall. Can't wait to see him blur his way to the endzone a few more times this fall!!!
