Could someone educate this 29 year, old school coaching vet the offensive sets of 21,22,11 etc...on just exactly what they all mean? I know it's about # of backs and receivers but I am just not exactly sure of each one. We still go by, Pro, Slot, Wing T and on and on. Thanks in advance.

I might add, we were just at Northwestern University and they had seperate dry erase boards with all these numbered formations so they could put up their defenses for each set. We probably won't get into that much detail but I think it would be an easy coordination to have your defense adjust to a "31" call call rather than " trips right open one back".

Bucky....generally those numbers refer to the personnel groupings. In most of my experience the first digit is the number of backs, the second is the number of TE's. So 21 is some type of 2 back 1 TE set (and 2 wr) (PRO, TWINS). 22 would be a 2 back 2 TE 1WR Set.
The idea is that in the college game is much more personnel based. In H.S. I would venture to say that teams don't use various personnel groups nearly as much, because of the lack of depth in the talent department. Most HS 3rd and 4th WR are not as Talented as the Starting TE, or one of the Running Backs or they would be starting somewhere.

I agree the standard meaning of 21, 22, etc is for personnel groups, but we use it also to define our 'spread/no TE' formations. We're a traditional Pro, Slot, Wing formation team and we use the numbering system as follows - the digits in the numbers define how many wideouts are on each side of the formation. Example- 12/21 formation - Instead of the traditional 'Slot Rt Open' we'll call '12'. 1 wideout on the left and 2 on the right. The filpped formation would be '21'. 13/31 formation - Instead of 'Trips Lt Open' we'll call '31' The only other one we really use is '22' for a double slot look. We've found it to be much less wordy and very easy for the players to understand.
