Does anyone practice and hit in full padded girdle with thigh pads and something like volleyball knee pads and shorts instead of using traditional practice pants? I am curious. It is the same protection just without the tight (or loose) polyester practice pants and shorts instead which everyone would agree are more comfortable.
Thanks,
Bryan

I don't understand why you'd do that. If it's for comfort, wouldn't they have to wear pants during games? If they have to wear them during games I want them practicing in them.

I don't think the fact that you practice in shorts and wear pants in a game is going to greatly change how an individual plays... it would take alot to convince me otherwise.
I graduated from college a few years ago and practicing in shorts was way better then being in pants for players.

Most days of the Summer here it is 90+
We let them wear shorts with their girdles underneath... they all have to have butt, hip, and thigh pads in

I did this when I was in high school, and now I suggest it to all my players, and tell the parents at the parents meeting. Very much cooler, same protection. Every one of my players that has gone from practice pants to the girdle and volley ball knee pads is amazed by the difference, especially in those august doubles.

I am just speaking from my experience the practice pants suck the game pants are great and a big difference in comfort. Thinking about I think the shorts would save your legs more wearing them all week as apposed to the practice pants.

For us, we'd rather that they're more comfortable on Friday than on Wednesday. If the boss told me tomorrow that we're going to do what you suggested would I fight tooth and nail? No.

I know when Sam Harrell was the coach at Ennis, Texas, they wore shorts and shells instead of practice pants. Even when they scrimmaged other teams. They had a lot of success and really seemed to get after folks....

If your practice field looked like ours, you would wear full body armor with practice pants and knee pads both.
The only concern I would have is if it were still full go would be getting skinned and scraped up on tackles to the ground when it gets hard, dry and the grass gets scarce.

I didn't wear knee pads to practice my entire senior year because the damn pocket in my practice pants was ripped out. I never really had any problems going that route. Then again I also never wore a butt pad because when your butt is as wide as mine was then and now that little pad isn't going to do much good.
I have honestly never heard of anyone using volleyball knee pads with shells in place of practice pants, but I'm sure they are cooler. My only issues with it would be the added cost of having to buy volleyball knee pads in addition to the pads that we already issue and the other teams finding out and calling us all kinds of names because we practice in uniforms like the lingerie football league.

We do not tackle anyone to the ground on most days unless we know we are specifically working tackle drills that day... we tell the kids they have to wear full gear these days most days we run plays and just go thud

This has been a part of St. John's University Coach John Gagliardi's philosophy for years, and they have been very successful!!

Wore them at a previous school and the kids loved it.
We don't wear them now only because it kind of a waste of money. We wear pants the first week of contact and then through our first scrimmage. So about 8 days. After that we don't wear pants except on Friday.

All of our players purchase the girdles with all the pads in them. The players are instructed to wear the girdles all the time, even if we go out in helmets and shorts(they wear the girdles under their shorts). On the days that we go out in shells (helmets and shoulder pads) we can basically do everything (except tackle to the ground). We have not had any injuries related to not wearing pants. Believe it or not, doing this has also helped our kids learn body control.

We are doing this for the first time this year. Much cooler, same protection. Volleyball knee pads are actually more protective then the regular football knee pads in my opinion and the kids just feel faster and lighter. Another plus is the fact that we put our linemen and some others in protective knee braces. The braces are a lot easier to get on and off without full length pants.
Our game pants are almost all lycra so they stretch very easily and are light. So come game time it will not be that big of a difference. I think it is a huge mental boost for the kids. I know that when I played, I absolutely hated practice pants. They always seemed bulky and abrasive. Just my opinion.

What is the legal and insurance angle of this?

The legal angle? I would ask what protection does a knee pad provide? The answer is minimal to none. If they were effective the pros would wear them.

When some kid gets hurt and the parents sue the district for them not being "properly equipped" to play football or the insurance company does the same thing?

What does a knee pad protect? A patellar crack? That's it. What other possible knee injury could it prevent? Can't think of one. The pros don't use them. The vast majority of colleges go without them. And I've only been a part of one program that wore them on a regular basis.

We did they shells and shorts in college also. We did not wear the volleyball knee pads though. IMO and I know if I was a player still I would not want to wear volleyball pad. The coolness difference I think is not a big enough difference for me to do this. I do like the shorts and shells and thudding and not tackling, but if we are going to tackle and go all out full go I would much rather wear fully issued football gear and not some half issue and volleyball gear.

We have done this for several years. For the first half of our season the temp. is at or above 100, our kids love them and we haven't had any injuries attributed to not wearing pants. Most schools in our area also are going this route so we are not alone. It also helps us get around our heat policy that says we can only go out for a limited amount of time in pants when the heat index tops 110. The two biggest things we have learned from it.
1. Buy long shorts- the kids like them better and it protects their thighs from getting turf burn. 2. We used to allow them to pull the knee pads down to cool off during the non-contact parts of practice (stretching, conditioning, walk-through) but it got to be a huge headache making sure they had them pulled back up when they were tackling so the rule now is if you are on the field they have to be over your knees.
Some of our kids started wearing their volleyball kneepads under their pants on game nights as they felt it gave them better protection.

Anyone got a picture or suggestion of what brand/type of knee pads to use? I would think as simple as this... Federation rules mandate that we wear knee pads. Traditional knee pads are a joke. These are clearly better. A few questions: 1. Do they rescrict running? Volleyball players don't have to run. Can you run with these things? 2. Is it legal to wear these in games under the pants instead of normal knee pads? 3. How comfortable aare they?

Honestly as a db we used to just cut our knee pads down so they were almost non existent I could see a rb or te wanting better protection.
On the vball knee pads I used 1 once and it was fine dis the job it needed to. We still mandate pants all the time but again we dont have the same heat as you guys

full pads 3 days a week. thursdays we are in 'half-shell'
as the year wears on, or on extremely hot days (um, we get a lot of those here), we may go half-shell.
practice is about preparing for the game. if something helps them better prepare (cooler, more comfort - allowing for more focus, better work) then we are all for it. using the argument "we don't wear shorts on fridays" ... we don't bench press or have a squat competition on fridays either, but i bet you do that in preparation for the season/games don't you?

We don't go half-shell on work days. That's not "to get ready for Friday". It's for safety. We don't trust kids to stay off of the legs. We tell them to and most kids get it but you only need one 15-year-old scout teamer to forget and there goes your tailback. We're either in full pads or no pads.
With all that said I am coming around to the idea. It's not happening here this year for budgetary reasons but I do get it.
