What type of drills and team activities do you do that helps your team to overcome adverse situations during the course of a game or a season. In our program we have been very successful but we still have break downs when things go bad. Please give me your team drills to overcome bleak situations?

In our program we have been very successful but we still have break downs when things go bad. Please give me your team drills to overcome bleak situations? I wish I knew. I'm not sure that there is such a thing. If a coach has any I'd be happy to learn but I'm not sure there is. It happened for us but it was a process that was naturally learned. We had games last year where we as a staff had to come in and refocus the team. Fast forward to the state championship game, we've just played our worst first half of football all year and I fully expect that we as a staff are going to have to go in and refocus our players per the usual. But we get in there and the players are 100% focused with an attitude of 'ok we've been here before lets go out and win this {censored} thing' as a staff we really had to do nothing. If anything it was being in those situations before and overcoming them that got us to that point. I'm not sure it can be coached.

Not sure it's revelant but during pratice we try to put the offense or defense in tough or unfair situation...
i.e: defense make a great stop on our offense but we call a penalty that give offense a first down.

You want them to have a killer instinct which is almost a front runner mentality but fight back when you are down. If I had the answer to this I would be a very rich man.
1. Find the one kid that has that and reward him. Make him the face of the program even if he is not that good. 2. Make them think about quitting everyday during the summer but don't let them. Make your conditioning tough and question their heart while they are doing it. 3. Remind them that they are special. Only special people play football because it is hard. 4. Anything that you think it will make it your culture. 5. What are you going to do when it is 4th and 1 and I'm not standing behind you. What are you going to do defines you as a peroson and athlete. They hear it all the time.

Thanks for the comments we already do a lot of this type stuff. Our kids grow up in this atmosphere and it is just real tough to be this mentality out of them. We work on this daily but still see it at times of despair. I will still be watching for more comments and again thanks to all who commented so far.

I agree with Julien.
One thing I've done if a bad attitude arises in that scenario (that wasn't a penalty!). Talk to your captain on that side of the ball(or someone who the kids look up to) and teach him how to react in that situation (basically tell the guys "We got this, we'll do it better than we did the first time" or something like that. Or ... if their on defense, say something like "Fellas no worries, we'll just take the ball away and score ourselves"
Basically, have this guy come off confident that they can do it again and it will be better this time. Make him say it loud enough so, in practice, everyone hears it.
One kid we coached did this late in a game on defense and said "Who cares? We're going to make them waste even more clock". Stopped them again too.

Topdog, First let me say I liked what julien said, and we do this at times... I'm not sure if I'm hitting the nail on the head with what I'm about to express, but here goes it anyway... 7th and 8th grade coach for several years --- I would in groups take the kids up to the press box and show them the advantage of the view... I had several pairs of field glasses ( one a very good pair that I got while in the Marine Corps) The meaning behind this = NO EXCUSSES We would point out at different times that the Eyes were uppond you all... Are You going to meet the challenge... We also came out of the huddle with the saying of " One Heart " instead of break... Not sure if this did anything but we entered the field, Practice and Games with the saying One heart - One beat, from day one ... My way of thinking --- If I was a head coach --- I don't want to get into a spitting contest with this but I believe the game has lost some luster from years pass, in some area's... Just for regular games, one would have to get their early to get a good seat... Now get their at kick-off and plop your hiney down on the 50 ... Heck even the Soph. game prior, it was getting near standing room only... Then again this was in and around Chicago... In short when the chips are down, are you just playing for you or your team or school because we played for are community... Doing so just may be the thing to help in the tough ones... Thing is they need to be in the mix ... Just again my way of thinking but I would try to get more support from the community ... I have a way to help with this but it's long to explain but let me know if you have any interest... If I was a H/C = I would have my upperclassmen dedicate their season... Before start up I would invite them to a children hospital, with their permission to spend the day with their kids... Maybe 3 players for one child or whatever... Give them some gifts ( radio to here games, stuff toys , art stuff , ect... Take pictures, just a day with them... First Game maybe a few kids can come to the game, maybe not ... Parents will be guardian during game... Spoil them ... This is dedication game ... Picture of their kid's gets walked to a in-cased picture board that will be displayed at where they enter for the games all year... No need to look any further for the meaning of tough when the chips are down... Was thinking to change it to vet's because if anything would happen to their child it just may be to much to bare ... I'm thinking of doing this though, to dedicate my coaching year to a child so I won't whine about the hour's ...
