I'm looking for creative ways to carry writing implements during practice. I tired the mini sharpies...but looking more for what coaches do...ala Jim Harbaugh. I don't always have shorts with pockets. I don't always wear a lanyard. I ain't wearing a fanny pack

Hook the pen right to your t-shirt collar. Works great! If it's a pencil, put it behind the ear or tucked into your hat.

Usually hook it to my whistle. I also have one of those driver's ed teacher clipboards that has room for pens in it:

Could have a student manager carry one for you.

I lose a pen or pencil a day it seems. I get real active during practice so if its on my body anywhere, it will come off some time. What I do now is put my practice plan in one of those protective sleeves and drop the pen in there. During indy and group when I'm real active I just set it aside out of the way. When I get to team, then I have it. That has worked for me

I'm the header so all the shorts I buy (even the mesh-workout kind) have pockets on them.

Over the years I've probably given away a dozen pair of shorts because they didn't have pockets. we order regular shorts for kids' spirit packs/workout shorts coaches get special ordered ones with pockets in them... that said I have yet to find a pair of coaching shorts where my phone and keys didnt fall out as soon as i sat down

Maybe you can talk the head coach into buying everyone a couple pairs of these:

Here is how the coach of the Super Bowl Champs caries his. Sorry, john - somehow I just can't see Lombardi (or even Holmgren) doing that.

I clip it on my whistle during practice, on the part of my shirt that buttons during the games.

If you look around on the internet a little bit they make pens on a string that you can wear around your neck. My wife used to be big into hot air ballooning and talked me into being an official for the national championships one year. I've had a couple different styles of those pens and they worked pretty well. The best one I ever had though was just on a caribiner clip and had a retractable chord like a janitors keychain.

Maybe you can talk the head coach into buying everyone a couple pairs of these: I love my bike coaching shorts. I wear them at least once a week during practice. No, I am not kidding.

For years now I have a pen cap taped to the same lanyard my whistle is on. Then I can remove the pen, make a note and return in securely to the cap.

Walmart sells a pen that is two parts and when not in use is only about 3 inches long, I clip that to my shirt collar or laynard

I have made the mistake of forgetting pens in my shorts and then they go through the wash. Not too happy about what it did to the dryer and the other clothes. I use the protective sheets for practice plans, depth charts, play lists etc... and I put the pen in that. It has to go length wise so I can still roll it up. I find that's the best way to make sure I have a pen / pencil.

Here is how the coach of the Super Bowl Champs caries his. The coach of the NFC North division champs is too cool to carry a pen! I'm sure if the rest of the Chicago Bears knew that they'd blame the lack of a pen for that playoff loss (I heard every excuse including blaming Lovie for the coin toss...). Sometimes you just get beat. Sorry to hijack the thread! ----------------------------------------------- I know one coach who used to tie it in the athletic short string they sometimes have. Bothered the crap out of me.

In regards to the Bike shorts: How did you guys keep the waistband from rolling over? Our HFC ALWAYS bought Bike shorts that always rolled over. Musta been defective.
