Starting QB broke his ankle in a summer league basketball game today....
Looks like we might be a little more run and a little less shoot...

I agree with Coach Fetty. Hopefully the other guys have put in the time as well. I got down to my backup JV QB starting a Varsity game. Just coach everybody up and see what comes!

fwiw ... in 2009, our starting QB was lost for the season in the 4th game of the year (just prior to our first district game). our kids responded well, overcame it all, tightened their belts and still won the district and advanced to the quarterfinals.
in 2010, we lost our RB on his 2nd carry of the season and our QB in the first series of our district opener. They were our 2 best offensive weapons and both all-state caliber players. again, though, our kids didn't blink an eye - the expectations didn't change - and repeated as district champions and advanced to the area round of the playoffs.
it takes a special group of players to do this. it takes a team. it takes a program. expectations never change. the task at hand never changes. overall approach doesn't change.
did the play calls & "style" change? somewhat, yes .. the 2010 QB was our bell cow. on pace to throw for 2,000 and rush for 1,500. were very balanced on offense and very explosive (40+ a game). without him, we became more run oriented, more wildcat, more fly sweep. less vertical passing game, more play-action.
in 2009, we made a great run after our qb went down. however, it may not have happened had our qb not gotten hurt. when he went down we expanded our wildcat package to get the ball in the hands of our playmaker at the snap. he was utterly amazing - almost superhuman - as we developed that package. we talk often about if we would have every evolved that package so much had our qb not been out. we likely would have stayed with what we had be doing exclusively and left the wildcat as a changeup. but, due to a "tragedy", and by not changing the attitude or expectation level we overcome by developing another aspect of our offense and it exploded.
play to your strengths. play within your current system. don't lower the expectations or change the outlook/approach.

Thats gotta hurt, I agree with some just coach up the other guys, and tell them if they all raise their game up 10% they can fill the void. I know sometimes all the "coaching up" the kids wont help anything thats just the sad facts. Those that are able to plug and play be glad your in those situations.

Our expectations won't change. But it does change what we do. Different skill sets. And there is that gnawing feeling in your gut that you are about to start a sophomore in 5A football.

Good luck man..... I agree with the title of post. If we make a change at qb this season due to injury or underwhelming performance we will have to go to the drawing board to have to be successful
BUT
expectations should not change. No Limits to what kids can do!
