I would say basketball more than track. Track develops linear speed and explosion only, not that they are bad things, but I want hips and shimmey on my kids.

There is no more a competitive sport... no more a disciplined journey... even more, an activity that takes as much courage as wrestling...100% heck 110% agree with you! I tell kids all the time that "Football aint for everybody becuase it takes a special person to run as fast as they can and throw their body into another person and love it so much they do it 60-70 times a night" Wrestlers get that, they thrive on that.. and they seem to have the best body control. So my vote is WRESTLING.....of course I do like track too

I am really shocked... I wasn't going to read this thread because I just knew everyone was going to say WRESTLING... Shocked... But let me put it out there... There is no more a competitive sport... no more a disciplined journey... even more, an activity that takes as much courage as wrestling... You are putting everything you are worth on the line, man to man, in front of everyone that cares... about the one thing we men hold dearly, in regards to our place in society... can you kick my ace? Yeah you can play basketball, but can you kick my ace? Yeah you can run fast, but can you kick my ace? Yeah you can wrestle, yeah... you can kick my ace. see, I would probably say wrestling, but it has never been offered at any of the schools I have been at so I am a little ignorant about it Being married to an Iowa gal that was a trainer for many wrestling camps and the Iowa wrestling team, I have been exposed to it quite a bit, albeit on tv. The funny thing is, when we watch it on ESPNU or something I am always asking questions about "how is that a point" and things of that nature trying to learn. She looks at me like "duhh, everyone knows that" Baby, I am from Texas. There are more schools that cow wrestle than real wrestle here.

I think it is important that kids compete. Heck I even like my kids to play baseball. However, I LOVE wrestling for my kids. I can take a 130 lb. wrestler and get him to do a job that would take a 200 lb non wrestler. Plus they are usually just more than a little mean. LOL.
How much I like a sport honestly really depends on the coach of the sport rather than the sport itself. If the other coach demands discipline and works the kids hard that is what I really want. I know some coaches that would work a Golf team the way I want to see it done and other coaches that would work wrestlers like a girls tiddly winks team.

Echo what many have said- I want all my guys out for wrestling. It teaches quickness, use of hands, strength, etc. You can't beat it. When you are finished with wrestling go to track. Except for our school, skip track because they do nothing and just come to after school weights.

Wrestling and basketball have benefits for different types of athletes, but track will definitely cover all your guys. I played baseball from the ages of 4-18, but when I started coaching, I knew track was what was going to make us better.

OL, DL, FB, LB: Wrestling RB, WR, DB: Soccer or basketball TE: Basketball Everyone is encouraged to warm up/sprint with the track (not field) athletes for form purposes. Coach, I agree with this, except I like lacrosse for RB, WR, and DB. Hitting, sprinting, and open-field moves are all part of the game.

Wrestling. Where else can you find speed, quickness, leverage, strength, balance, area presence, tenacity, guts, attitude, reaction and that's just the warm up.

The one thing that you will not develop in wrestling is ball skills. As much as some coaches hate those pretty boys, someone has to catch the TD passes. Likewise, someone has to stop them from catching TD passes.
FWIW, our school has a fantastic wrestling tradition and the football program has been pretty dreadful during that time period as well so I am not entirely convinced that wrestling is the best sport for carryover. It certainly does have its benefits though.

Track, wrestling, lacrosse, hoops.
Track is good for everyone.
Wrestling is good for everyone, but OL / DL stand to benefit the most.
Hoops is good for TE's, WR's, DB's.
Lacrosse is good fro LB's, RB's, etc.
ANY sport is great, in the end!!

What about baseball? I am not a big baseball guy but:
Baserunning: Explosive sprinting with rapid acceleration and deceleration.
Batting/Throwing: Hand-eye coordination
Fielding: For outfielders tracking a ball in the air, wouldn't that be similar to tracking a punt/kickoff (granted w/o 11 angry men running at you). For infielders...quick feet to position themselves in front of (as much as possible) a ground ball.

i wrestled for 2 years in HS....i miss that so much.
it was you and the other guy. nobody to depend on....nobody to have to carry.
the workouts were killler.....we just ran and ran then ran some more.....we were not that good...but heck we were in shape....then we would do mat drills....and more mat drills.
the competition was far better and more fierce than the team sports....most wrestleres had some sort of internal thing that made them keep fighting and fighting.
foot work and leverage are important....i am at a small school so we dont have it....but the one sport that i wsh we ahd more kids competing in is track.

Just another shot on this thread - basketball is good for football players, but wrestling is better! Baseball is good for football players but track is better! The two "B" sports are games with other guys out there for you to play (hide) with. Wrestling and Track are basic me vs you, and that creates the toughness and the competitiveness that many coaches have alluded to.
What happens at basketball / baseball practice? Yes there are a few conditioning drills in basketball but basically both of them are skill practices. Wrestling and Track practice is about 75% conditioning and training in the same areas that will benefit football players. Once again, basketball and baseball are good... wrestling and track are better!

The only problem with wrestling is it is becoming a full year sport in our area, The wrestlers are asked to wrestle year round now. That means keeping off the weight year round. The other problem is that some wreslters begin to cut weight at the end of the football season.
Besides that I think wrestling is great for football players because it involves competition everyday and stregth training everyday.
We have lacrosse in the spring but that seems to draw more of the soccer players in our school but I would to see football players get involved with it.
What we have now that works well is the track team has 3 football coaches on stafff so all our football players run/throw for the track team. Our OL coach is the throwing coach and DB/WR coaches are the sprint coaches.
