I always tell my student athletes who play football to play at least one other sport in the winter or spring sports seasons. Some are three-sport athletes.
Which sports in the winter and sprin seasons do you think have the greatest carry-over for football? In other words which sport(s) should improve athletic skills used in football the most?

I played baseball...but it is probably the worst one as far as translating to football...
TRACK is where I want my kids at in the off season. You can never be too fast or too quick.

Golf Seriously though I think basketball is underrated when it comes to the carry over. Foot speed is guaranteed to get better and it is a more physical game than it gets credit for.

Good point here....... I like wrestling for big olafs B-ball for those big freshmen who look like they could become very athletic......work on coordination and feet Track for everyone......only if you have a throwing coach who works the throwers

I agree with track and wrestling. Here in New Mexico, soccer is during football season, but in Texas we used to have a lot of players go to soccer after football was over.

If you've got it in your school, lacrosse hands down.

I honestly feel that basketball is good for o-line types. We depend so much on agility and foot speed for our offense. Our basketball playing o-linemen are always the most agile kids. Wrestlers make good running backs due to the balance involved and it also makes good linebackers/defensive backs due to the aggressiveness of the sport. It just makes you wonder what the overall carryover is for all sports. If you have a strong wrestling program, what is the likelihood of a strong football program? Basketball to football? Track to football? Baseball to football? I know there are many other factors (coaching, support from home, tradition, etc.) but there might be some correlation. Unfortunately, the school I am in now does not have wrestling and baseball is the strongest program with the highest participation.

I've always heard and believe the following- wrestling for linemen and middle linebackers basketball for skill position kids and tight ends
baseball for kids who are good at it track for everyone else

I like soccer more than basketball, baseball, or swimming. The conditioning and leg development of soccer is rivalled only to rugby (does your school have rugby?)

SPRING FOOTBALL Really, for me, any competition is good in my book. Like for our guys to keep their competitive fire about them. "learn" how to compete (because you can't "learn" how to win, if you don't know how to compete)

wrestling I think cause it teaches players how to use their leverage.
wrestling is the only sport you just cannot do either. basketball all you need is a ball and a hoop, football you can throw the ball around but you cannot really work on say the physical aspect of football. baseball kids play, hockey kids play.
wrestling is all about drilling, drills and fundamentals. it takes a different type kid to believe in this. this is why say basketball and baseball are lacking in fundamentals. kids just want to play these games. very few kids actually work on the individual aspects of their basketball game outside of shooting maybe.

The only thing I know about wrestling is that I like what it does for football players. And along with track I like the carryover.
But if a kid has an ability in basketball, he'll make himself a better athlete by competing there. Of course I was only a one-sporter and spent the offseason wrangling cattle which I'll argue is the best offseason carryover.

Rugby works well, but I don't know how popular it is in the states.

I think rugby is the ultimate sportsmanship game. you spend time knocking the living daylights out of each other and then you go throwback some longnecks in a sign of ture sportsmanship.

I like what Coach Huey said about competition. I think that kids learn how to compete best by doing it, no matter what the context. It also gives them motivation to keep up their grades and stay out of trouble!

OL, DL, FB, LB: Wrestling
RB, WR, DB: Soccer or basketball
TE: Basketball
Everyone is encouraged to warm up/sprint with the track (not field) athletes for form purposes.

I coach semi pro players, and a lot of players play indoor flag football all winter. You can really see a big difference between the guys that have been playing flag all winter and those that haven't. In my opinion, that is much better preparation for the full contact football season than anything you can do in the weightroom or track.

Got to go with wrestling and track. Wrestlers are hands down the toughest kids and track simply makes you faster (or quicker or more powerful). I'll take care of the foot speed and agility that soccer or basketball might provide during my football practice. Give me the thick neck, cat quick, tough as nails wrestler who also goes out and busts his butt in a track workout.

When they're developing: Soccer
When they're in H.S.: Basketball / Track / Wrestling / Soccer - no particular order because each kid needs something different. For tougness - Wrestling Speed - Track Agility - Soccer Overall - Basketball if we had Lacrosse, I could endorse that (football with a weapon!)

I'd say a toss up between track and basketball for conditioning. If boxing was a common sport in hs, I'd say boxing for conditioning and toughness!

You should be banned for such nonsense. Actually, in Illinois soccer is the devil because it happens during FB season. I wouldn't advise getting your football players to play it for any football reasons.

THen Football/wrestling/Basketball/Baseball combo. Just to get experience in pressure situations.

I am really shocked...
I wasn't going to read this thread because I just knew everyone was going to say WRESTLING...
Shocked...
But let me put it out there...
There is no more a competitive sport... no more a disciplined journey... even more, an activity that takes as much courage as wrestling...
You are putting everything you are worth on the line, man to man, in front of everyone that cares... about the one thing we men hold dearly, in regards to our place in society... can you kick my ace?
Yeah you can play basketball, but can you kick my ace? Yeah you can run fast, but can you kick my ace? Yeah you can wrestle, yeah... you can kick my ace.

I see what khalfie is saying as a big carry over on the oline. man on man be it run block or pass block. can you kick my but. best drive blocker I have ever saw was a 190 lb wrestler. know how to use leverage and drive. man to man can you whip my but.
great thing about wrestlers, you can tell them to run through a brick wall and for a moment there, you can see they are thinking really hard about how they are going to do it.
