I agree with some of the coaches on here that say, it depends on the situation. You maybe on a staff that has 2-3 new assists/new coaches or you may have (like someone else said) coaches on staff that have 40 plus years of experience. All coaching staffs are different, and they change from year to year (most of the time), so whatever works for your staff is the best for you and your program.

I do not understand how the ability to be a good OC has anything to do with what position is being coached. The idea that the OC should be the Oline coach because "it all starts up front" is a strange concept to me. All offensive coaches know that without a good Oline it is very difficult to be a consistent winner. We put our coaches in the best position to help the team be successful, period. The OC is a manager that uses his resources to develop a plan and implement a strategy that is workable for his teams talent and attacks the opponents weaknesses. I do not see a correlation with what position is coached. We have a great Oline coach, but I wold not want him designing the weekly offensive strategy. He does not have those abilities and he is not interested in developing them. He is very happy doing his job and our staff is thrilled to have him with us.

I am an OC and I was the QB coach last year. Our OL coach left after this past season and I am relieved because he was a TERRIBLE coach. I played OL in high school and college and have eperience coaching OL, but I have spent the last five years of my coaching career with QBs. Our HC feels I should move to OL because we were so poor there last year and he feels I would bring great improvement. The only problem is now the HC is the QB coach and he has no experience doing so. We started a freshman QB last year and he needs to continue his growth. I am still doing all of the offseason meetings and drill work with the QBs but I am concerned about in season and whether he is getting the proper instruction during practice.
Is this move a smart one or will the development of our QB suffer because our OL needs such great improvement?
