I know there was a fairly recent thread similar to this, but I'm wondering what others do when a kid gets injured early on; do you letter him or not? We have one who would have played every down had he not gone down with injury in the second game. As a result, he didn't get in the minimum number of quarters. Would you letter him or not? Thanks for the input in advance.

If the kid would have lettered he would receive his letter at the school I am at. Don't penalize the kid for his injury. It already sucks bad enough for the kid

We don't go by how many quaters a kid plays. The coaches sit down at the end of the season and decide who deserves to letter. We would letter the kid in the situation that you are talking about.

I was trying to come up with a better system for lettering a few years back. We had a tremendous freshman class that was doing everything necessary to become better individually and as a team. They were going to be our future players, and they were going to set the standard for what we wanted done. However, they were not ready yet for the varsity level of play, and I was not able to reward them with a letter under the system in place at the time.
The one we used now is something that I stole from an article in "Scholastic Coach" magazine. It is somewhat tailored to fit our needs; I cannot, in any way up with this on my own. claim responsibility for coming up with this. Here is our current system:
* - 20 points to earn a varsity letter
Varsity game played……………………………………………………………...1 point Every four performance awards...........................................1 point Attendance at spring practice..........................................1-2 points Summer football camp.........................................................2 points Summer lifting program....................................................1-3 points Participation in another SBHS sport.....................................2 points Second Semester Honor Roll……………………………………………..2-4 points Fundraiser participation...................................................1-3 points NO missed or late practices....………………………………………………5 points NO unexcused absences……………………………………………………….3 points Absence from practice…………………………………………………………..-1 point Team rule violation....………………………………….....……………....…-5 points NO team rule violation during the season...……………………...…1 point Return equipment in good condition by assigned date...…….1 point For every day not turning in equipment on time..………...……-1 point Coaches prerogative points.............................................1-3 points
Players must also finish the season in good standing and attend the Fall Sports Dessert.
* - If the team qualifies for the playoffs, all players who finish the season in good standing will earn a letter.
The "Coaches Prerogative Points" apply when the kid may be a point or two short, for whatever reason, and you can help them out.
We have found that this system is better for us, in that it keeps the younger players engaged longer, is a tangible program for parents to look at, and is fair to all of the kids.
