The HC just called and told me that because of a tornado warning all after-school activities, including weights, are cancelled. I'm not complaining (venting a little, maybe) because I respect the power of a tornado. 26 people were killed by one not far from here last week.
I understand the safety and liability issues so I understand why they did it. I'm just curious if this is common. Does this happen in other parts of the country?

Ok-not a weatherman so I dont remember which one is worse, a tornado warning or a tornado watch. If we had whichever of these is less, we would not cancel anything, but we do have a plan on what to do with the kids if we are caught in whichever one of these is worse.

In CA we have had practices cancelled for poor air quality. Sometimes this is because of fires, but most of the time it's the heat index and crummy air. I think it's completely stupid, but it's not my call.

I'm right with you because I'm not sure which it is. I do know that it's the worse one. Again, I know they have to do something but it's annoying.

A tornado watch means "be on the lookout, pay attention to the news," a tornado warning means "it's coming, no guarantee when or where exactly." And with 200 people killed in Alabama yesterday, your administration probably doesn't want to get sued.

watch = conditions are present to where a tornado could form warning = an actual tornado has formed in the area

We cancel when weather could threaten the safety of the kids (tornados, snow)....whether it's the pussification of America or common sense... our whole county does the same thing, so one day isn't the end of the world..it is what it is

The music makes it all the sweeter. And I don't know if it's my failing memory, but most of those apply to me but not to my players, and we're only 10 years apart!

In the south, few things preempt football, but this is one of them... This spot where this video is being shot is about a mile from Alabama's football facility. Death toll over 200 and rising in AL.

I love and live for our game. However there are some things that remind me it's a game. This is one of those things.

maybe this is an upper midwest thing.. ONe time we were entertaining a backyard grilling session. some family from kansas was up in Gods Country (AkA Wisconsin) and a tornado watch/then warning came about.
I have never seen people run for the basement. Mean while, those of us from the midwest were still grilling and having an adult beverage looking for the tornado.

Its real bad in the valley. at my last place we got handed sheets at a mandatory coaches (whole district, all sports) meeting showing what air quality meant limited practice, no practice, indoor only, whatever. kind of a side note but in the valley we have fog days where the schools dont start til 10 or so because visibility is so bad.
