We are the smallest school in our county and are dealing with low numbers. We only have 35 players coming out for spring ball. We may have to put everybody both ways and split the practices up. Does anybody recommend a good practice plan for a team dealing with two way players?
Thanks

Coach, click on my website below, click on Practice Schedules, and then click on the last file. It is a good schedule for having a lot of two-way players and has Practice Scripts too.

I'd suggest tailoring a lot of drills to your scheme and running group drills and 1/2 line drills. Don't spend hours in Indy and Team time. Our practice would look like this: Indy or Specialty Warm Up period Special Teams w/those not involved working skills in a pullout sessions Circuit (offensive skill, blocking, tackling, etc...) Group Drills Inside/Outside Period Team Indy (whatever wasn't Indy during warmup) Group Drills Inside/Outside Team
Everything is a 10-20 minute session (Indy likely 10, team likely 15 or 20). Group drills on offense are play specific, defense can be a blitz period, reads period, whatever Pullout the kids that aren't involved to get extra reps. If your QB isn't playing defense, get him extra QB reps during defensive indy or team time. Same with other guys. Especially don't waste Special Teams time and let the kids not involved with the kicking game sit around for 20 minutes. Get them involved in some drill or scheme work off to the side.

Divide the pratice up and have offensive or defensive preference periods.
If not many players are going both ways then just have "crossover period"
If these guys are on off they go to def and vice versa.

I don't feel like it's rocket science, have done it at every school I have coached at.
Mon-Film, On field insert/game plan review helmets shoulder pads Tues- Offense focus 20 min team D period before O indy/team etc full gear Wed- Defense focus same as above Thrs- Walk through O/D/ST Fri - Game
Specials every day after warm up. If we have a Sat game then Thrs is half O half D with a short indy time and team periods for both.
All kids have a O/D position that they practice with during the week. Never had a problem with it.

Ive done this everywhere Ive ever been too. We never are on the field more than 2 hours except deuring camp the first week of fall. W have split them down the middle and alternated. Both have been good. One thing we do to help get extra work is ... if we are on defense doing a DLine pass rush drill, then I have as many OLINE working on stopping the pass rush at the same time.
