What approach coach? Respectfully, you have YET to contribute one piece of info about lack of competition at positions--the original topic of the post. "Respectfully"? I've tried to be helpful (as was johnknight) but you obviously haven't seriously considered anything I've posted. Approach = Be Positive but Demanding (not demeaning). Focus On Player Development-Individual Improvement this time of year. KIDS ARE COMPETING ONLY AGAINST THEMSELVES TO "BE THE BEST THEY CAN BE" RIGHT NOW. Don't dwell on past failures, individually or as a Team. That is negative teaching. Competition at positions begins when the pads come on, not before.

Yes Respectfully. I have considered everything you posted. Again, I am simply saying that the EXACT situation that was described... I have experienced it. First hand, AS A PLAYER. And I say with 100% sincerity, I would have responded better to "Johnny, you have to remember you are playing against Shofstall, not Sharp this season" than I would have "Johnny, you need to be the best you can be".
Also, keep in mind, the main idea is NOT EVEN ABOUT THE WEIGHT ROOM. It is about introducing the concept that YOU PLAY ON FRIDAY NIGHTS...because you aren't challenged Mon-Thursday.
Our positions were sewn up long before any pads were involved coach. Like I said, my backup SQUATED 165 as a senior . I really thought I was captain awesome because I dominated drill after drill, practice after practice for 3 years. My friend Barry thought he was going to get a scholarship because he ran a 4.9 which was blistering for us.
