Grant Teaff shouted out these stats, also in Tom Osbornes book:
Grant Teaff Director of the American Football coaches Association “One of the major reasons our society is in the shape it is in today is because of fatherless homes and no positive male role models in a young person’s life.”
United States Department of Justice figures
63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes.
90% of all homeless and runaway youth are from fatherless homes.
86% of children who exhibit behavioral disorders are from fatherless homes.
71% of high school dropouts are from fatherless homes.
70% of youths in state institutions are from fatherless homes.
75% of adolescent patients in substance abuse centers are from fatherless homes.
85% of rapists motivated by displaced anger are from fatherless homes.
“Statistics are also very clear regarding the lack of a father or a positive male role model in the family. These statistics in no way diminish the great moms out there who sacrifice, work extra jobs and still do an extraordinary job raising their children. There are hundreds of examples of outstanding men who have become great leaders because of what they learned from their moms.”
Dont ever let anyone say having a dad in the house isnt important- It is When you coach in an area that has lots of problems like this- expect to be a social worker as much as a youth football coach You can make a huge impact in a kids life- often times you are the ONLY male in an authority figure in his life and if he has more than one, you may be the only one he respects.

One more stat I'd like to see: the percentage of fatherless homes that are the product of fathers from fatherless homes.

You are touching on an issue I take very personally. Quite often we are the only authority figure in these boys lives. Coaching in NYC I saw this on a daily basis. I feel it is our responsibility to teach them how to be men. Football unlike all other sports is truly a work effort & team sport. Unlike baseball where a pitcher can take over a game, or basketball where 1 super player can dominate; football needs 11 to play as 1. I believe that's often what draws these boys to our sport. They can belong to something they can take pride in.
I have coached for 33 seasons. Over my career I have been lucky enough to coach 3 players who have played in the NFL. I also have coached 5 players who were shot. So it's more likely a player will be shot then make the NFL. I have always tried to give my players a higher goal. That is to get an education. I have had well over 1000 players play college football & get their degree. That is what I am most proud of.
One thing has always bothered me. Often coaches mistake inner city players defensive attitude as an attitude problem. Dave you know me, & you know I am not saying anyone deserves special treatment, just fair treatment. Many of these boys come from a reality we can not even imagine. the truth is more then anything they need the structure & discipline of football. Bear Bryant always said he wanted a player from a poor back round; because that player would never quit. He had nothing to go back to. We as coaches have to reach these boys, otherwise they have no hope.
