Coachcb, i used to be a teacher and now I am in business, mainly self employed. what you are doing is nothing different then they do in the business world. businesses coach up those who want to be there and let go the ones who are merely just putting in the time for a pay check. In the animal kingdom mothers nurse in the order of strongest to weakest. the lions share of the milk goes to the strongest. only humans try to make equal all people, except all people are not equal. how many times have you see victory go to the lesser athlete who worked harder then the talented athlete. Sadly our education system tries to bring up the fairness doctrine which setting kids up for failure. This is one thing I have always liked about track though. There is a team aspect but it's all about individual performances when it all comes down to it. It really can be "athletic Darwinism" at it's finest; the kids have to get in that ring or on that track, compete like crap and watch the rest of the field kick their a--es. This is really true in the throws because it really is all about form. A lesser athlete can be a pretty good thrower once they nail down their technique. I have one girl who pouts during every meet because there are girls half her size (she's not chubby; very athletic girl) that beat her down every week.

This is also why I love wrestling. two kids at the same weight go out on a mat in front of a packed gym. the winner's hand it raised. the loser knowing he lost has to shake hands with the winner.
I believe football is not a team sport. now this is going to sound counter to some. football is about 11 players giving their individual best on each play IMO

Those kids know they'd better work hard and learn technique or they're going to get thoroughly embarrassed in the mat. You're right, football is about eleven kids giving their best but the kids' performances directly impact the everyone else. If I have a center that doesn't get a good replacement block for a pulling guard, then the guard gets tripped up. If the guard gets tripped up then he can't do his job and the 3 tech doesn't get kicked out. If the 3 tech doesn't get kicked out someone in the backfield isn't going to be able to perform. In track, my sloths and their terrible throws do affect the team as they don't score points BUT they don't directly detract from each individual performance. But, we had a pretty good practice yesterday. I forced a few of them to start working into the spin in discus and they had a little more success. They weren't as much of a pain in my a-- as they usually are.

A neat little demo that I like to use it take 11 players, pick up 11 rocks and have them individually drop them into a pail of water. then I take the rocks from each player, put them in a bag and drop them into the water. I talk about a little splash with individual rocks but a big splash when all 11 rocks work together.

Well, the football coach came out in me today.. It's snowing here and we were stuck in the gym. One of my better girl throwers decided she didn't want to play today; wouldn't lift and was screwing around while we were doing drills. Thankfully, the runners were doing a really fun plyometric workout so, she became a sprinter for the afternoon. She came back crying and asked me if she could workout with us. I told her she needed to finish the practice with the sprinters and come back tomorrow ready to work.
