I took over a program last year and things have been going fairly well thus far. However, it seems to be a mentality that kids don't turn in their equipment. They leave it in a locker or put it in a bag and leave it outside our football office. The gear comes in dirty and . . .
We do fine kids- but that simply means they do nothing until spring and then there is a rush of 30 kids needing to return gear from the fall!
I was wondering if anyone has suggestions or a system that they apply to get the uniforms in in a timely manner. Your help is appreciated!

School policy that they cannot start thier next sport until equipment is turned in.

We take their stuff from them right after last game - they don't leave until it's turned in.
Day after last game we have Team Meeting to vote on awards, discuss banquet, off-season, etc. They turn in their washed practice uniforms and anything else outstanding at that time.
When we issue equipment each kid gets a card on which we record what they've been given. They sign and date it, give it back to coaches. Anything they get during the season is recorded.
Friday after season ends, if we still don't have something, I turn it over to AD/administration as lost or stolen equipment and they either send kid(s) home to get it or give them ISS until it's returned.
When we have our Parents' Meeting in June I tell parents that one of Player Expectations is to care for and RETURN all issued equipment - after all their tax money paid for it - and what will happen if they don't.
So we have almost no problems in this area.

Embarassing announcements over the school PA every morning. Start sublime, like "XXX and YYY, please return your equipment" and evolve to the ridiculous, like "XXX and YYY, if you don't return your equipment we will come into your house in the night and make like Clockwork Orange"

We wash practice jersey's and practice pants each weekend for our kids, so after our last game each year we already have all of their practice gear. The night of the last game we put out large tubs and have them all labeled, (game pants, game jersey, girdles, thigh pads, knee pads, belts) So now we have all of their game equipment.
The day we have our last team meeting we have the kids bring their helmet into the shower area and we dunk each helmet and shoulder pad in tubs and kids have to hang the pads up in our drying room. We lock the drying room and let everything air dry for a few days. Coaching staff will come back in and put all helmets and shoulder pads away.

After our last home or away game, we collect the kids jersey as the enter the locker room -- no entry without turning in their jersey....so that's one game jersey collected. After our last game, we have the kids meet at our equipment room with the card they were issued in the beginning of the season. they turn their card over to a coach and drop all of their equipment into the appropriate bin. If anything is missing, the coach makes a note of it...the kids have a couple of days to turn in anything missing. After that, we issue a fine -- they do not get their report card if there are any outstanding fines. Also, they do not walk through graduation ceremonies if there are any outstanding fines. Our biggest concerns are helmets, shoulder pads and game uniforms......we are fortunate to have enough suplus with the other stuff we don't really miss it if we don't get it back...

We turn in all gear the Monday after our last game. We always have a few stragglers but after about a week or so send a bill for missing equipment to the parents, that seems to get stuff returned pretty quick.

The last week of the season we start to collect anything the kids will not need for the last game. If we play at home, we will collect away jerseys. After the last practice, we collect practice jerseys. After the last game, we collect the day's game gear and all hardware. If a kid does not turn in something, we send a charge slip to our guidance office. The kid is not allowed to start another sport until the obligation is paid. If the kid doesnot complete the obligation, he will not get his report card or will not have any transcripts sent out to colleges. When we fill in the charge slip, we make the total $$$ due about $400 and write a note that the equipment must be reuturned to us, and not the guidance office. We make the kid returned the stuff to us so that we know the equipment signed out, and not some junk, is returned. It works for us.

We collect the monday after our last game. We also set a late turn in date. Those who have not turned gear in get a call home. Parent contact with a bill for a large dollar amount creates motivation.

Regarding the dirty uniforms -- we get our developmental students to wash them. The teachers actually put the stuff through the machines but the students fold them and sort them, and they seem to enjoy it.
We take our game game pants to a local laundry mat and they scrub, wash, and sort all of the pants for 50 cents a pair -- this is a great deal in our minds, especially after a muddy game. They actually use baby shampoo on the stains to get them out!

We have gone to kids buying their girdles, belts and practice pants and they keep them. They buy a new pair their sophomore and junior year. Don't have to buy them their senior year. We already collect their game stuff after each game to wash so all we have to get are their thigh boards, knee pads, helmet and shoulder pads. We have a meeting on Tuesday after the last game and everything is turned in and post-season awards are voted on. A debt slip is issued for anything that doesn't get returned. Can't start a new sport, go to Prom or walk for graduation if they have a debt. Works great.

We collect all practice gear after the last game if we aren't going to the playoffs. After the last game, kids turn all the gear in. We then bag it all up and send it to a local launderer who washes it all. We usually have about 90% of the gear turned in after the last game doing things this way.
