I just got home after spending this past weekend in Orlando for the Nike COY Clinic. I was one of the presenters for the Youth sessions and I had the privelege of having Joe (mhcoach) present with me. I was a real pleasure to finally meet Joe after talking with him so much here and on the phone over the past year or so. We worked very well together doing the presentations - we did sessions on the Screen Game for Youth, Defensive Principles, and Practice Planning & Methodology.
I apologize for not getting the word out in advance - it would have been great to have been able to meet some of y'all that are in Florida - but I've been so buried at work that I barely had time to prepare for my presentations and get myself out there that I never got a chance to post anything here.
Besides working with Joe and picking his brain as much as I could, I got to hear several excellent speakers including Kevin Sumlin (HC at Univ Houston) speak on working with QBs, Bob Stoops on his 50 Defense Pressure Package, and Hugh Wyatt on DW and his "original Wildcat" - which is basically a direct snap DW. I got a chance to speak a bit with Wyatt and rode to the airport with him as well - nice guy and very knowledgeable about not just coaching but football history as well. I also got some face time on the ride to the airport with Greg Schiano (HC at Rutgers) after listening to his talk on defensive drills. Real interesting and insightful guy - I can see why he's had so much success in turning around Rutgers and why kids would want to play for him. He also did a pretty good Joe Paterno imitation, LOL.
I also sat through several other presentations, some of which were not as good as some of the others. One HS coach from Southern Florida was clearly bitter about how he was forced out of one school. One DB coach for an SEC school spoke so fast and with such an accent (not to mention a very distracting habit of saying "awright" between every thought like some people say "Um" - e.g. "So, what we're gonna do, awright, is get the CBs on a line, awright, and then we're gonna git 'em running, awright, and then, awright, we gonna git to work, awright ...") that I barely understood anything he said. LOL
I also got to chat with a bunch of coaches, which is always fun for me. As Joe says, there just isn't a finer group of men anywhere than football coaches. I met quite a few Dave Cisar disciples and enjoyed hearing about how they've had success (some moreso than others) in turning around their programs. We also got in several plugs for this board throughout our presenations so hopefully we'll see a few new faces around here in the coming weeks.
Anyway, all in all, it was a very enjoyable weekend. It's nice to be home, though.
