What traditions do you have at your school that are unique?
Example: Nebraska's Blackshirt Defense. Born out of necessity due to the lack of colors at the local sporting good store but made what it is today because of the remarkable play of the defense.

Each year for homecoming we have a what we call a "Purple Swarm Night" at our homecoming game we break out the purple game pants and purple game socks to go along with our purple game uniforms and purple helmets. We encourage all our fans to wear purple. Kids love it.

The Thursday walk-thru practice before Halloween, EVERYONE must dress in costume for the practice. Their costumes can not prevent them from participating in the walk thru. A lot of fun!

A segment of my old team (mostly hogs) believed in NEVER wearing anything under their pads, and just a really simple short-sleeved mesh (think 80's) jersey over them. Also, no long socks, and no complaining allowed. Practice, game, whatever. Note that we played well into November in an area afectionately known as the "snow belt," so it was quite the commitment.

We have an alternate jersey that we wear on Homecoming and for home play-off games.

We're a young program, so we really don't have any long standing traditions. But there is one thing that we started doing this year that I thought was pretty cool, and would like to see us keep doing. Our kids started using the motto 'keep chopping wood' (came up with it on their own) last season as a reminder of having to work hard every day and every week. For the last couple of home games this year, before the team came through the banner, right out front of that in between the two spirit lines, one of our team captains would swing an ax and bury it in a tree stump that was painted in our opponents school colors. We played a team whose mascot was the eagles and they even painted a rubber chicken in their colors and chopped its head off on the stump one game.

Our team motto is "TEAM-me". Big "team", little "me". We exit the locker room through a set of double doors. Above one door we've painted "TEAM" and "me" is painted above the other. Whenever we go out for practice or a game the players always go out through the "Team" door and reach up, tap the "Team", and shout "Team". If somebody forgets the players quickly correct them. For an away game (all of them. We play in a city stadium) the kids write "Team" on a piece of tape and put it above the stadium locker room door.

Biggest tradition around here: kicking kids off of the team because they have three F's on their report cards..
