I'm not necessarily advocating this approach but this is how Pop Warner does it all the way up to the national championships. Once the point differential is above 28 the following rules go into effect and stay in effect until the end of the game: - Running clock except for called timeouts and official stoppages. The clock does not revert back at any time.
- As long as the point differential remains 28+ the leading team's offense cannot pass or run the ball outside the tackles. 5 yd illegal procedure penalty if you violate.
- In the event that the leading team gets an interception or fumble recovery the ball is dead at the spot where possession changed.
- No onside kicks.
I will say that these rules work in that myself any many other coaches do everything we can to avoid getting into mercy rule situations. I have seen games where a dominant team will give up TD's on purpose to allow them to keep running under normal offensive rules. I don't do it but I understand that because if you're getting to mercy rule in the middle of the second quarter every week then you're not getting game situation reps for your offense.
