With a small college in Iowa. They have a full time position open, I played for the head coach in HS. Money IS an issue as they are offering 28-32 K. At 32 would be an 8K payCUT. Will fill you in on questions and such after I am done. I am REALLY hoping that the salary is negotiable, as 35K is what I have to have guaranteed to even think about it.

knighter,
If you REALLY want to be a college coach, you are going to have to bite the $$ bullet to start (from experience) regardless. Could make up a little of the difference working camps (and networking) in the summer.
If $$, security from teacher tenure, or being your own boss is more important to you, my advice would be to tell your old coach thanks for thinking of you, but you're happy doing what you're doing.

When you say samll college I assume you mean JUCO, D3, NAIA. From my experience with those schools, 28-32 is very good money.

I would die to be in your shoes. Sounds that we make that same $ now.
I would jump all over it. My Wife may leave me, but that is a chance I'd have to take. It will not be easy. Work the camps, etc.
Truely, Do some sole searching, Pray about it. The answer will come

Congratulations coach, it sounds like a great opportunity. Like some have stated, there are other avenues you can think about to increase your wages. The camps are a great idea, and maybe some personal tutoring on the side (just have to advertise it). Also, I have a friend at a D1AA and he has some type of clerical or adminstration job at the school as well. I don't know exactly how it works out, but some colleges offer "side" jobs to help their coaches out or the help you find something in the community that might fit in the time frame of coaching. Either way coach, congratulations and I hope you find some way to make it work.
Sincerely, Coach D

Yeah, I'm jealous as h#ll! That actually sounds like GOOD money to start from what I understand. If you have the ability to do this without putting yourself in a cardboard box, you should seriously consider it.
You never want to ask yourself "what if" after it's too late.

Knighter...just somethings to think about on formal interview.
RETIREMENT and Benefits What type of retirement plan will you be able to participate in. What type of Benefits (Health Insurance mainly). Job security drops, pay drops, benefits and retirement typical drop in almost all levels of college ball excluding Division I (and perhaps only big time D1 at that). Do you have retirement at the school you are at? How will leaving affect your current plan? Are you going to forfeit a great deal?
PROGRAM ENTHUSIASM and Atmosphere. I know that often High School programs receive more enthusiasm and support from community than the small colleges. Nothing soils a coaching experience more than you working 100 hour weeks, and finding out that nobody really cares.
Lastly, "final destination". Is this the goal? Long tenure at this school? Or are you looking to get into the college rat race? If it is the latter...try to get on the defensive side of the ball, because if they are running the wing-t, you will instanly be labeled and unfortunately might get confined to small shcool football (and all the negatives with them) for life.

Hope you get it coach....Have been talking to a player from there that I coached, DB Jason Calhoun. He just got his summer workout last week. Like I said, he has spoke volumes about Coach Dillon. Let us know.
