I understand the points that the author of the article makes, but I also think Williamson could have made more effort to play. One of my starters this year lost his mom on the Tuesday of our last regular season game, which was on Thursday night. He did miss practice for two days, but he was ready for the game and played very well. The funeral was Saturday morning, and he played the following Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs. While it is true that he didn't have to make all the funeral arrangements, he still had a lot on his plate and was able to deal with it. It just seems to me that Williamson could have made a little more effort.

I totally disagree with the Vikings here and I totally disagree with your school not giving you bereavement pay, dcohio. That's a good example of your kid, superpower, but just because he was mentally ready to play just a few days later doesn't mean Williamson was able to.

If you can get it done before "Mike & Mike" go off the air, or at least before Stephen A. comes on, so much the better. ......and THIS is what is wrong with pro sports. and also why I am not into following politics (and the trends).......a majority of misinformed people does not make "right". Leadership (decisions) is not determined by the convenient opinions of the masses. Coach, you'd better appease Stephen A. Smith or Tony Kornheiser or Mike Golic or Jim Rome or some other Cheesedick 'journalist'........ or they make you out to be Hitler and run you out of town no matter how you lead your team

I m with brophy on this one. I first heard this on Milwaukee radio (which i don't hold to a high standard at all, it's bush) but they said why would this guy get this long of a greiving period? Then I put on ESPN, and they have the opposite opinion and just side with the player, which is nonsense. The Vikings are not wrong in this situation whatsoever. but hey, glad they got a scandal before they come into Lambeau.

It is a business. The NFL business model probably doesn't have sick days and PTO days for the players due to the structure of the business. The viking office workers probably do have such conventions and therefore those would be how this situation would be handled for salaried employees. Most hourly employees simply wouldn't be paid for the time missed.
DC-- I DO have a problem with your district docking you a days pay if you have other provisions such as sick days/personal days etc. If that is the case, you were punished for simply being honest and not calling in sick.

I just don't get how on the one hand Andy Reid is being criticized for not giving his family priority and Williamson is getting critized for not putting the team first.

wolverine---I dont think ANYBODY was criticizing Williamson for his actions. He wasn't being punished. He simply wasn't getting paid for a game that he chose to miss.
It is moot now, as the all powerful media has once again bent people to their will.

They just said on Sunday Countdown that the Vikes rescinded the fine. Also, I wouldn't classify missing a game to handle funeral arrangements as "choosing" to miss it.

The guy was gone for 9 days and made no contact with the team for those 9 days. To me the fine was justified, but the Vikings did rescind it after all the negative publicity.
