Most of this summer, I have been frustrated with kids and parents, concerned about effort, mad that our practice field grass is dying since it has been over 100 degrees for three days and our watering system needs much improvement... And then today was a strange and good day. Four guys from different eras who I coached stopped by either home or school today and I talked with them for about an hour each. This afternoon I received a call from 3 former players (who decided to call me from the bar after work) who I coached while I was in Colorado. Finally tonight a guy I coached in 1992 called to say hello. All these guys who called or stopped by did so just to say hi, check on this year's team, and just shoot the bull. I talked with eight former players today who live in five different states... kind of a neat day. After the last phone call, I sat back and realized why I do this and how important it is. I'm sure everyone on here has these days once in a while. We need to always remember these days... especially when we get consumed by worries and frustrations. There is a much bigger picture than titles, trophies, and wins, and we are all a big part of that picture. So here's to coaches...

My favorite part of coaching as well - seeing the impact we make.

Congrats Senator!
I have been feeling the same way as you lately. After reading your post, I went to my "Why I Do This" file where I save the cards, letters, emails from former players, parents and others that define what coaching is to me--hard work, commitment, courage and character. Self-pity party is over, priorities realigned--Thanks for the post.

Champ, I love the idea of a "why I do this file"....You can bet I have started mine. Thank you!! Been a long summer for us to Senator, this on paper should be the best team my school has ever had. But they really aren't getting the work done this summer. So I guess we'll see, I really needed this thread. Thanks guys!!

great post coach, couldnt agree more. i also had a moment like this, although mine was a lot more emotional. a player i coached 2 years ago was recently murdered, and all of the former staff and players met up at the wake. i spoke to alot of my former "kids" who have moved on to be real estate agents, cops, firemen, and some are dads now. we all enjoyed a drink and shed a tear or two. but most of all we talked about the "good old days" and how much those years meant to us. alot of kids move on and never look back. but there's always a few that will be a part of us forever..... and that means alot.

days like those really help when you get caught up in the other struggles. I had a great day recently also, one of my senior lineman (that was a freshman when I started at this school) the greatest kid. This kid had lost his father five years ago when a drunk driver hit him after work. Now the kid is running the family farm, he brought farm loan applications to lineman camp between his freshman and sophmore years. The other day he informed me he just made eagle scout and can invite two people to the ceremony and stated he wants me there. Now that was a great day.
