A players prospective: About Coach

This past week my son came home from school with a project. He was asked to write a paper about his H.S. Coach. I won't go into great details why but would like to share with you some of what he wrote. He wrote about challenges, encouragement, role-models, character, maturity, and being fundamental. He wrote about his coach being so much more than a "COACH" but more about a Mentor and friend. I have watched my son grow into a young man with many values, that I would love to take credit for. But after reading this and talking to him I have a better understanding of "Coach" and what he has meant to my son. The best part was he told me he could write a paper on each one of his High School Coaches and what he has learned from each one. It became apparent to me and his mother that Jr. was getting alot more than X's and O's from these guys. I have fond memeories of my High School Coaches, and live by the values they installed. I thought Jr. was getting some of the same, but after reading the paper and talking to him he is getting more than I ever dreamed. It was a good experience and I'm sure Coaches thoroughout the State fail to realize sometimes the impact they are having on our young people. I know its not for the money, the opportunities are better elsewhere. But if you could have heard what my 17 year said to me and his mother you would see football and "COACHES" are more than X's and O's. Life skills are taught by parents, teachers, preachers, but the word "COACH" took a new meaning this past weekend. I know Jr. wants to look into the teaching profession and someday "Coach". We as parents have tried to tell him its a long road and at the end theres little reward (money). But after hearing him this past weekend, I think "COACH" is about the best you can do, in his eyes. I'm just not sure COACHES realize the impact they're having. I know Jr. probably doesn't show appreciation, or the respect he feels but I will.......THANKS to all, who today someone refers to as "COACH".
