haha...I know how you feel! Usually takes me a week or so but I try to look forward to something else. I will coach another sport - it still keeps my mind in something competitive.

Who says you gotta turn it off?
I always preach to my kids that there is no off season.

Who says you gotta turn it off? I always preach to my kids that there is no off season. It's always football season - just sometimes longer between games. That said, too much of a good thing, even football, is still too much, especially at HS level. Kids can get tired of hearing your voice. And coaches need a break too.

I tend to throw myself so much into football physically and emotionally that I need the summer off. Dont get me wrong its only 3 months but it gives me a great chance to recharge the batteries before I start planning for the enw season.

For me, the time to turn it off is now. I'm actually having a hard tie getting into the offseason anyway as there is doubt as to where I'll be coaching next fall, if coaching at all. But still, I'm talking some x's and o's with the fellow coaches and helping monitor/supervise/coach the weightroom 2-3 times a week.

I enjoy actually getting to watch football on TV and only 1 month and a half until clinic season starts

It is hard to get into the offseason without knowing your future plans....I just try to help out around here as If I know I am going to be back, that way I can guarantee the quality of what I am doing it....still tough to get motivated for at times though.

I'm not worth a damn for about a week after the season ends. I'm retired so I don't have anywhere to be so I may not leave the house after I get the paper in the morning. One thing that I definitely do NOT do is go and watch playoff and championship games. If we're not in I'm not interested.

This thread reminds me of an earlier thread I started. Not completely the same but a related topic nonetheless. www.coachhuey.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=41770Like blb said...preparation is the same, just a 9-month gap between games instead of a week. I am currently doing tasks as Head Coach to prepare and will do even more during Christmas break as well. The weight room is open every Monday-Wednesday-Friday until Christmas break. That schedule will resume after the holiday as well. We don't start meeting as a staff until after the new year. Clinics throughout the winter obviously. We were born with eyes on the front of our head so we're always looking forward instead of back. If what we did yesterday looks big to us then we certainly haven't done much today. Let's get to work!

There is a guy on our staff that shares your thoughts. Not only won't he go to a Friday night game, he will barely watch football on TV. Weird thing is, he was a Division 1-AA All American offensive lineman. Whenever we get eliminated, I love going to different places and watching quality football.

I'm still to young and stupid I guess. I'm still at the age that I can't ever get enough of football. With supervising weights three times a week along with two of the other coaches, catching as many playoff/state games as possible and watching plenty of football on TV... I haven't slowed down much with football. With that said, we have taken a break away from the daily grind of worrying about x and o's. Pretty much this site is the only time I see or hear about x and o's right now. Once basketball starts winding down and we get into Clinic Season I'm sure the coaching staff will be itching at the bit to dive back into next season.

Plus, if we're out of the playoffs going to a championship game is like going to your ex's wedding.

I'm with phantom.
May be petty but I'm not interested in fighting parking, traffic, siiting in crowded stands in bad weather for playoff games after we've been eliminated.
Plus I'm jealous - Hey, I said it was petty.
I do watch some state finals games on TV to see what teams are doing X and O-wise and coaches that I know who are involved.
It's also nice to be able to finally spend Saturday and Sunday watching CFB-NFL games without worrying about game prep.

We as coaches definitely need some time to relax and unwind. After a tough playoff loss to end the season it definitely sticks with me for about a week where thats all i think about. Eventually I let it go. The winter season is my off season. I will still be in the weight room but besides that It's my time off from coaching until I start working with my baseball players in February.

Want to cool down after the season? Go talk to your principal / administrator.
That'll take the wind out of your sails and bring you back to earth.

I love going to playoff games with my son and his buddies. We have a ball on friday and saturday nights and then always get a room and go to all six finals. Lots of fun really. It is awesome bonding and you learn a lot about playoff caliber football teams and programs.

right after the season is my date season... ill find a girl to date... date her through the offseason, then we will break up in the fall because im too busy with football ... im kidding
My original plan was to give myself a break, focus on finishing up school, relax, enjoy time away... but i gotta be honest, i am bored as hell now.
I got a big test saturday ive been focusing on (CBEST, test in CA all teachers must pass)
and i have my last final for the quarter on monday. After that i will be even more bored, so i decided im just gonna be our weight room guy. Im gonna open it at least 2 days a week, try to get another coach to open it another day or two during the week. I gotta stay busy with football, we sucked this year and I wont let us suck again next year. Im going to have a meeting with all the offensive linemen some time in the next week or two, maybe buy them pizza and tell them how serious i am about them being there everyday in the offseason.
I like going to watch playoff games. I have a good time, hanging out with friends and watching some good football.

The hardest part is trying to wrap up last season, reflect and learn from things done well and also mistakes; and at the same time trying to plan the next season. ADD I guess.
