Too bad I didn't get to the Friendship Games to get a better handle on a question I've been wondering about with our club. We play house ball, and all teams were required to install the same core offense. We could install as much as we wanted on top of that. However, with our very limited practice time, having to install at least the core does cramp your style. I did wonder whether one object of having such a core offense was indeed to limit further the time we'd have to put in other stuff, to make for fewer surprises in a circuit where our prep time was so limited. Also it might've been to ease the transitions when returnin players switch teams as they graduate from division to division.
However, the stated reason for the core offense (and defense, theoretically) was to make possible an all-star game after the season. Our director of football ops says we'd be outclassed (and often outweighed) by travel teams, so as an alternative to bowl games for teams after our season, they held out the possibility (not promise) of such a game. After telling us months earlier we weren't having one this year, they sprung it on us with short notice -- and the Saturday after Thanksgiving is a tough time. Depending on division, 1/3 to 1/2 of the players would be selected.
They played a game for each tackle division right after each other on the field in what I guess was to have been the culmination of the fall's play. However, what I don't know is how big an attraction these Friendship Games were. I've heard of some players turning down an appearance, especially now that basketball season is on for many. What I'd like to know is, how attractive to your players, coaches, and followers would an all star game be, if you didn't have any playoffs or bowls in the circuit your teams play in?
