Congrats to the rest of you no matter how your teams did this season. I hope you had at least as good an experience as I did, and many more should you continue later.
I was out of town for the Warriors' Friendship Games this Sat. I got a ride back that happened to pass the park and can verify that we left it reasonably clean. I'm told the team that was made up half from our players won the Pee Wee Div. game 7-0, and they didn't lack for coaches between Brutus (whose son played) and the staff of the Ramblers, who made up the other half of the team. I also heard our director of football operations, Jerry Demers, was there, so maybe he's over the mysterious ailment that so exhausted him recently. These post-season select side games -- which may or may not be played in a given year -- they sprung this one on us without much warning -- are the reason given for installing the club-wide core offense and defense.
Now I'm thinking about next year. No matter my complaints, I had a better experience with the Warriors than with the North Bronx (Co-op City) or Gun Hill ass'ns, so I think if I'm going to coach again next year it'll be there again.
I was hoping that they could keep the team together as players moved up in class, but no. Returning players within a division stay with the team, but go back into the draft when they cross the line into the next one, which means that except in cases where someone's playing up a class, they really have only a maximum of 2 seasons together, which is how we wound up with 5 of our Pee Wees this year. Apparently the object is to prevent a dynasty from being established (by a good initial draft) and carrying on for many seasons, even if they're younger than average when they move up into the next class. Most of this year's Blue Devils will be Juniors next season, and there's talk of letting the player I described as a shark with his open field blocking move up in advance of his age even though he's so small right now.
It will be possible to keep a few players together on the basis of their fathers -- Dave, Brutus, and Eric -- staying together as a coaching staff. So then the question next year is whether I put my name in to be picked as an assistant preferably with the Juniors, to wind up together with those 3 if Dave wants me, or whether to state a preference to stay with the Pee Wees and have a chance to become a HC of a team. Lots of time to think about this.
I'd like to put in a more serious brand of ball than is mostly played (with more focused practices), but we get only maybe half the hours of pre-season practice that extramurally playing clubs get, and I won't be able to build on any previous coaching I did with these players except as some of our younger returning Pee Wees get drafted by my team if I stay in the Pee Wees. OTOH if I move up to the Juniors I might get to coach again a few of the same players I coached this year as part of the same staff -- or another staff.
