Arriving early, this was the first time I noticed that our cheerleaders (who were practicing) work & time out their "plays" in more detail than our players do. Maybe we should switch coaches with the cheerleading coaches. Then again, maybe they have a shorter "playbook".
I learned that Jerry Demers, our director of football operations, is still sick at home and no diagnosis has been given out. I had earlier mentioned his condition to a political friend, who it turned out knew him too as a donor on behalf of Little League baseball. Small world when you get into community activities.
Then I heard from the lady who's responsible for bringing 2 of our players that The Girl would be late because she was playing basketball in a church league, but that the Head Case (Mr. Distractible, Mr. I Forgot, Mr. Sore Nose) was here. Turned out, however, that The Girl made it under the wire to play the entire game, and that we were allowed to have #3, who showed up late for warm-up play the entire game as "compensation" for the Head Case's failure to bring his mouth guard. Still, our starting QB was out because he too was playing basketball, though apparently not in the same game as The Girl.
Oh yeah, we played a game too. Maybe had we gotten a big lead early we'd've kicked extra points (as I mentioned in the practice-in-gym thread), but somehow we wound up going into the wind in both halves. We don't change ends with the quarters, and I'm not privy to the captains' meetings with the referee, don't know how that happened. Looked like our usual as we got up 7 points early over the Redskins, but we failed to pad our lead in the first half. #3, who doesn't usually distinguish himself in my mind with his play, maintained an open field block on the Redskins QB as long as I've ever seen done to make that TD possible, and the XP was caused by the Redskins' failure to bring down our Big Guy after stuffing him initially when we snapped from the 8 yd. line following a penalty.
Before the half ended our starting QB arrived from the basketball game so he could play the 2nd half. No wonder our players work up such a sweat! Then at halftime The Girl brought over a brand new mouth guard for Head Case, but without boiling water there would be no way to mold it to his mouth, which is prognathous with buck teeth. I feel sorry for him, but for the team it's just as well he didn't play; he needs to get it together mentally because he does have athletic ability.
We had two long TDs called back for clipping or hands in the back, although we did get one of those TDs eventually on the corresponding drive anyway. The we scored another TD despite a clip that wasn't called. A Redskin dropped what would've probably been a TD pass considering he was behind our whole defense by a fair distance, and we showed other signs of lack of discipline. But we won 20-0 in mercy rule territory anyway, the Miller Tire Blue Devils closing out the season 8-0.
Afterward I gave away a suprise present -- users.bestweb.net/~robgood/lather.html. I wasn't sure how a team of mostly 11 YOs would take that, but almost all of them eagerly took a bottle.
I can say this is the most enjoyable season I've had coaching. For one thing, it was the only full season, considering the team I'd assisted in 2007 disbanded before finishing and the team I was with in 2008 booted me before they even got 11 together. Winning makes up for a lot, but what helps more is that these kids actually liked me or at least didn't dislike me.
And that's it. Or is it? Turns out HC Dave can't make it for the Friendship Game Nov. 27, most of the players on one of the Pee Wee teams coming from the Blue Devils, and I doubt he'll be in the gym Mon. for their practice session. Presumably the 4th place team's head coach -- which is either the Redskins or the Ramblers, both 1-7 -- will do the honors. I don't know if I'll be in town Nov. 27, though I will if they need me. But unless I get a call saying so, I don't seen that my presence at the Nov. 22 practice in the Lehman HS gym would be worthwhile. However, I was glad the past couple weeks there to make sure one child (a different one in each case) got back to his parents.
