Anyone ever worked under an athletic director who would just cuss you like a dog from time to time? I am wondering if this is fairly standard amongst coaches to yell at young coaches in a similar way they yell at a player.

Not only is it not normal for the AD to speak to the coach this way, in many programs it is not normal for the coach/ad to speak to the kids this way.

No....that is totally unprofessional.....
I would bring it to his attention. Now I have been jumped by headers from time to time in order to get my attention or in the heat of the moment, but if he doing it as standard procedure that you have problem.
Guys that pull stuff like that are also the same gus who have revolving doors on their coaching staff and athletic departments

If you consider it verbal abuse speak with the AD if that does not resolve things work your way up your chain of command.

Things like that are very unusal. I'm not sure how I would respond to an AD chewing me out, but somehow I don't think it would be pretty. I have worked for 4 different AD's so far. They were gems and never really interferred with the team. I have been underessed by a header during a game a few times. On those occassions I kept a cooler head and waited to the locker room to get to the issue. I have been wrong(I know amazing right), as well as being right. Under the lights of the locker room it's way easier to deal with then stadium lights.

I would not tolerate abuse like that from the AD.
i would check to see what the protocol is for handling this. It seems like a human resources issue to be honest.
I do not think undressing a coach in public is a great thing either. take a few deep breaths and write down what you want to talk about.

As a "younger coach" I don't take crap from older coaches. I try my best to improve the players and the team, within the overall vision, I understand that he's my boss, and that we may disagree a professionals, but that doesn't give him the right to be a d-bag, and I woldn't hesitate to fire back if he crossed the line like that.
NB: I'm not a teacher, I coach for fun, I have no affiliation to any specific school, and I have a real day job that pays better, so I have a lot more leverage than you might in your situation.

It's unusual esp if it happens on a regular basis. That said, WHY is he yelling at you? I could see getting yelled at if there were serious problems and he though this was a better alternative than firing a young coach, but its his method of coaching the coach. Effective? No.

if you need to be cussed, take it. if you don't, cuss him back.
not a good way to keep a job, but do you really want to work for him?

I had a situation last summer camp where I felt severely snubbed by a few of the coaches and I was being put in a bad situation (two coaching staffs trying to coach one team for the summer camp). Long story short, there was a lot of miss communication.
I pulled the HC aside at the end and shared how I felt (lower than whale poop), but in a professional manner. "This is how I feel and it is not working for me". He listened and made me feel important and respected. That sit down made all the difference in the world for me as a coach and a person and the little inuendos and other snubs were then chalked up to "miss-communication". I feel since I was able to address the concern in a professional way, to the HC (and he wasn't necessarily the main culprit) I felt validated and we had a great season this year.
