How do coaches handle when basic elements of their team philosophy are not going well in a game.
For example how do you handle being a ball control team that has fumbled a few times in the first half? Or you run the option and cannot execute it because of stud defenders on the outside? Or you preach controlling the line of scrimmage on defence but are getting beat of the ball by a better executing squad?
Obviously if the same issues present themselves every week you have bigger concerns. I'm curious as to how you manage the situation on gameday.

1. Know your system 2. Know what defeats it 3. Know how to counter
As a coordinator, you have to anticipate anything and everything. What if they have a superior athlete? How will we counter? What if our bread-n-butter is not working? What else can we do? If they throw something at you in a game that you had never anticipated, counter the best you can or change your calls. Take it as a learning experience.
If you are unsure what could happen, ask as many other coordinators to take the time to game plan against your system. Offensive coaches have to find several defensive coaches (different systems) and ask them to defeat it on paper. Defensive coaches have to find several offensive coaches to game plan against their system. "If you fail to prepare, you must prepare to fail."

abandon everything you believe in at halftime... of course we just go back to basics and tell the kids to get back the scores one at a time. true story, we played a game and were losing 31-0 at the half. my coaches wanted to abandon everything we had practiced to date (the team that was crushing us was obviously loaded and was thrashing everyone while on a 17 game win streak). i pointed to the fact that they had not stopped us but that we had stopped ourselves with fumbles, injuries, penalties. at the half i sold my kids on 2.5 yards per carry adn scolded them for not doing THEIR OWN JOB as i saw several plays whre guys were not cut blocking on the backside as taught. anyhow, we didnt win but lost only 38-24. Our fullback ran for 132 yards in the 3rd quarter when the kids did what they were taught. those 24 points were the only points this team allowed all year. they went undefeated again. now, we could have strayed and ended up losing 65-0 like many of the other teams...you have to do what you are best at.
