"Those that will have fruit must climb the tree"...
we preach this the entire year.... climbing the tree (work habits, work ethic, etc. - winning) so that we can get the fruit (trophies, championships, etc.)

I agree with the love idea
You never win a championship without love....
My mom always told me and my sister when we were growing up and getting in fights that we dont have to like eachother but we better love eachother. Today we have a better relationship because of it...
Good teams are the same way. Some guys wont like eachother Saturday afternoon through Friday afternoon. But when you put the pads on Friday night everything goes out the window and we are family that will protect, defend, and battle to ends of the earth for eachother.
I still see guys that I have nothing in common with and never will that played on some very successful teams with me. We share that bond and love of the team still. We can have an hour long conversation about that what that team meant to us and what it taught us. We have moved away from talking about the memories of the games and about what it taught us about life, but the love for team is still the centerpiece.

Commitment Discipline Effort Toughness Pride
These values will eventually lead to "success" regardless of the talent level. Now whether or not success is championship is relative to the starting point of the program. A group with talent that believes in and exemplifies these values will have a great opportunity to win a championship. Of course, I believe also, at some point every championship team has alittle luck come their way as well. Favorable bounce of the ball, generous 4th and Short spot for a 1st Down, etc.

How about giving them more concrete examples that'll help them get there? Weights, showing up to lift when you're tired or feeling bad, getting together on your own for weekly pickup football games after school, keeping your grades up, attending 90% of the lifting sessions/practices so you can become the strongest guy on the team, etc.? The things you've mentioned are all important, but they're abstractions. One kid's idea of "dedication" may be "sitting around and thinking about how much he wants to win a championship without actually doing anything." Give examples of what terms like "accountability" or "hard work" actually mean to help them visualize just what level of commitment you expect.
