Heard today from our HC that another coach in our age group is trying to get a couple of our players to leave our team and re-enter the draft next year. Yep, another coach trying to influence guys on our roster to bail on the team. Oh, did I mention, he's also the league president. Why do I still do this?

I`m really glad I stick with school-based teams, in a very laid-back league.

We had the same thing happen this last season. The most talented team in the league tried to get our top two players but I got lucky and they said NO. The parents were the ones who actually told me what was going on it basically came down to how each team was coached and a lot of our parents in the league are down on their coaching staff. They are constantly yelling and degrading the boys but always do well because of how much overall talent they have.

If you can , get in with a school...this year was the 1st year in 12 I actually coached 2 teams, 1 was a youth football based program the other was a school based program... the differences were night and day.

Every area is different
Here the Middle School ball this state is pretty poor quality. They play just 4 games, 8 minute quarters. In Omaha and suburbs all the best players play club football. MS ball is almost 100% entry level football and it looks that way from the games Ive seen with my own eyes. Almost intramuralish in many ways IMO.
Most clubs are pretty well run. The large ones are large for a reason- survival of the fittest. Good orgs grow, weak ones shrink. Well run well led orgs with good coaches grow, weak orgs with poor leadership and poor coaching shrink. That's a good thing IMO
Most club teams have smaller team sizes, bigger coaching staffs, play lots more games and even travel. Not the case here for school teams. The best players almost always gravitate to the club teams in the state I live in.

MS football is horrible here in Charlotte. The private schools are much better then the public schools. We played 2 private schools, crushing them both. Each had beaten a public school by 50. Prior to this season we have had staff members also coaching the MS team. They were placed under such rigid registrictions that it made real coaching impossible. They only play 5 1/2 games( a half because the last game only gets a half in due to light). Most of our better players didn't play this season, instead just focusing on our team.
What has been a huge surprize is the quality of JV football. Outside of the top programs JV football is very poor here. Add to that there is no freshman football. Yet, the quality of HS football is very good here. IMHO that just doesn't add up. PSAL HS football is very weak(compared to other places) & has horrible JV teams. The CHSFL produces the top teams in the NYC area & has an extensive JV & Freshman teams with a playoff system. In Florida there is no MS football. They do have very good JV & Freshman teams.
P.S. I think Coach Rick is in a very tough bracket. Looks like he will draw Dr Phillips in the second round. Should be a great game, I'll be routing for him!

Joe,
It really varies from area to area. It seems that many MS programs are coached by the gym teacher looking for a stipend or coaches with little experience. In Omaha they gave the HC job to a woman who had never coached. Seniority thing probably, LOTS of coaches that played HS football but never coached. Many of those teams have 2 coaches for 40+ kids and they look like it. OTOH many of the better club teams have film, coaching staffs of 6+- lots of former College players there for the love of the game, they travel etc etc- No comparison comparing the quality and execution of either IMO. You go from scores of 7-0, 12-6, 14-12, 12-0 in school ball to the club level where you see 45-12, 36-6, 28-24 etc. From all base blocking vanilla stuff to traps, nice GTs, well executed option and passing games from the club teams etc
We have 2 private Catholic programs in our league. THe HS they feed into is Class B, 2nd largest class in the state. They dont field MS teams, their teams play in our league, wear the team colors, are overseen by the Varsity coach. They field multiple teams at each age bracket and vary in their success.
I have friends in Florida who tell me SOME schools have no Frosh football, meaning the PW teams are able to grab up all the lighter kids.
Hope you guys continue to win, would love to see your powerhouse team play in a few weeks.
