We tell our kids simply that if we win the toss, we will defer. If we lose the toss, we really don't care what goal we are going to defend. As far as choosing a goal to defend, what do you guys base that on? #1 = Wind .....If the wind is going to be a factor, I want it in the 2nd and 4th quarter. That may not always the be case ... if the wind is just awful - really howling and blowing hard in one direction - then I don't think you want to wait and take the wind in the 2nd quarter. It probably not good idea to kick off into the wind and face the possibility of allowing opponent to play short field right off the bat.

This is why I always go out to the coin toss with the players. I learned that lesson in high school when we had to kick off twice in a game.

I'm not worried about the wind in the 2nd and fourth. We may already be in a hole we can't get out of by then. Take the wind to open the game and the 2nd half. And like has been mentioned, the wind usually lays in the second half. At least it does in OK/TX.

I always pull captains aside, all four, and I instruct them where they stand and who is speaking for the toss. I will then instruct them as to what the Referee will say to them and u will tell them, "we are the visitors so you will call the toss, don't worry about that, call whatever you want." or "we are the home team so they will call..."
After that I will instruct them how the Referee will address them based on the outcome of the toss. The coaches and I will have decided if we prefer offense or defense to begin. The instructions to the players will be determined by the decisions of the Coaches. I will then give the speaking Captain the EXACT instructions on what the call/say.
Finally, I assemble the Captains one more time with the Referee present and give the players the exact instructions again, then I indicated to the kids that if they get confused that the Referee will help them to ask him for help. At that point I turn to the Referee and ask him to confirm my instructions.
We have had a lot go wrong on the field at times, the coin toss has never been a problem!

I very nearly did this yesterday.
On the sideline with the coaches chatting about the 2nd half and the ref comes up and ask me what we want to do as we defered at the start. So I tell him what I want.
THen the DC turns goes "UHhhh I think you f**ked up." Suddenly it hit me that I had made a massively wrong call and run after the ref. He told me that the decision was made and that I couldnt take it back.
Fortunately though he had already been told by my captain what we wanted to do. The captain had made the right decision, and he walked away smiling. So did I. I hugged the captain for saving my a$$ on that one.

I think--could be wrong--that this almost happened today at teh Outback bowl. Listening on the Radio to a VERY thorough coin toss, I thought I heard the Florida (Maybe...could have been PSU) captain say he wanted to DEFEND--to which the referee replied "You want to Defer to the Second half, is that correct".
Again, could be wrong.
