This sounds like it's all in the context and how the coaches know one another. I could easily see this being a dink move under different circumstances. Good forboth teams though, to show a little dignity and see that there are bigger things in life.

Since the coach receiving the ball was on-board with it, I guess it gets classified as "classy". I almost think it was pre-arranged, though. Unless you know the other coach will be on-board with it, pretty big risk to take IMHO. I know if I lost a tough game, I probably wouldn't respond too well to another coach offering me the game ball unless it was somehow pre-arranged.

I would not want the ball. Our Frosh team could use more practice balls...

I'd be greateful for the ball and thank the other coach and I'd put it in the centre of my desk in my office. As a constant reminder that we got the ball for losing.
Use the ball as a motivaitonal tool for my coachign staff and myself to get better.

Yeah we had our rival do that to another team in our conference this week. They were trying to thank them for the toughest game they had all year and a wake up call they needed...I guess...but it would piss me off.

He's honoring you and your team for a well played, tough fought football game. Why would it piss you off? Are you pissed at him for the gesture or are you pissed at youself for not winning a close game? Sometimes you have to except gestures for what they are and not read to much into them.
Like jlt said except it and use it as a motivational tool for yourself, your staff and you current and future teams.
JMHO.
