KSTP reported that the Gophers interviewed Charlie Strong today. I hope ESPN is wrong--they can not take a chance on someone who has not coordinated or had been a head coach.

They should have never let go of Mason.

Tom Lemming a highly regarded recruiting guru says Brewster is an excellent hire. One of the best recruiters he has ever worked with. Being a recruiting coord. at the Univ of Texas and asst head coach with the Chargers, team capt. at Illinois with the 84 Rose Bowl Championship team and 2x all big ten TE is a very good pedigry.

All reports do sound like a good hire, but there is a lot of uncertainty about his lack of name recognition. On another note, the U of M spent $100,000 or more for the consulting firm that is known for being discreet and secretive, but all we've heard the last few days is all the names of people who were interviewed.

I blame a lot of the rumors on the twin cities media, and some on Maturi. These hires at the div I level need to take place and be done in 2-3 days. Maturi wasted too much time IMO. Brewster was on their radar when the process started, he just did not have the name recognition. After searching the net, Brewster has been in the mix in a lot of good jobs the past couple of years. (Illinois, Iowa State, Oklahoma St)
I just hope he keeps Gordie!

Keeping Gordy on should be the first piece of advice Maturi gives Brewster, in light of the strong connection Gordy has with the high school coaches in Minnesota.

Should have hire Danny Mac (former Iowa State Head Coach). Quality coach, quality person. 1st class all the way.

I hear the big beef was mason had no time for mn high school football coaches. when you compare what UW does for the h.s. guys I can see. I mean the gopher clinic is like a few hrs the badger clinic is 3 days.

Mason's demeanor toward Minnesota coaches had been an issue since he arrived. If it wern't for the efforts of Gordy Shaw, there would have been no relationship with MN coaches. As JD and I discussed earlier, it would be a good PR move by Brewster to keep Gordy on the staff.

Not only is he a excellent coach he is also very good with us high school coaches. Though I am not on a 1st name basis with the man, he has gone out of his way to help many coaches I know.

FWIW, I am excited about the hire and think Brewster will do great things. Hopefully, Gordy will stay and won't be the only coach on staff with relationships with the high school coaches.

www.startribune.com/512/story/947004.htmlBrewster has decided to not retain any of Glen Mason's assistants. I am trying hard to give Brewster every benefit of the doubt, but I think it was a terrible move, PR wise, to not retain Gordy Shaw, for all of the reasons discussed here earlier. Great coach, great recruiter, great guy. Best of luck, Gordy!

You have to give Brewster some credit, even though I am not very happy about Gordy being let go. Brewster has a plan and not a lot of time. He is acting on his plan and moving forward at a rapid pace. I guess there will be as many as 6 or 7 asst. who will start work today.

No word yet. The article said names will be released in a day or two after the paperwork is completed.

Brewster was on the local news last night talking needing a relationship with the MN high school coaches. Today, Brewster doesn't retain the only relationship (and a GREAT relationship in Gordy Shaw) he has with the in-state commitments he hopes he still has.
In his press conference, Brewster states he will personally recruit the state of MN. In todays paper, an article talks about how all 9 assistants will recruit a portion of the state. It seems misleading to the general public that Mason personally didn't recruit in-state kids, which isn't true.
I understand about needing an action plan and a short time do get it done, but I think that validates the need to for Brewster to keep Gordy even for just the first year. Arkansas actually has a coach in charge of high school coach relations.
In thinking about this "plan" I immediately drew a connection to a close friend of his and how he always talks about his plan. To paraphrase Brad Childress, this may be my only shot at being a NFL head coach, so we damned sure are going to do it my way!
p.s. Andy Reid never let Brad Childress call plays (his plan), unlike Marty Morhinweg, but that is a whole different thread!
