We won our Division Title game over a previously undefeated team 15-14 to move to
9-0. They had scouted us very well at our last game filming, have the book, DVDs- LOTS of trash talking from the stands-coaches. VERY athletic team-6 athletes that can really run and very aggressive, excellent line play and I have no idea who their MMPs are- didn’t see any weak links. They ran us down from behind all game long. Big and aggressive front 4- no fat Freddies.
The game was and wasn’t this close. We did hold them 2 times inside the 10 without scoring- but we led the entire game- starting out at 8-0 on second drive. They had a very strong shotgun spread to run offense with a very good option QB (zone read) and nice passing game- so we huddled and took the clock. We also used a of custom tags for this game- huddling made sense. This is the FIRST time I got film of a team running a defense against a Single Wing team- our sister 5-6 grade team lost to them the previous week in a real battle. I got to see how they defended the Single Wing and got some real good film of their offense as well.
My competitors frequent this forum- so at seasons end will detail the adjustments we used against this team- we even had to come up with a brand new one at halftime- lined the kids up and ran it in the endzone. Our scout kids did a GREAT job this week giving us really great looks- they had a beast in our PT/RT gap.
Get this- only 21 players. My starting RT/DT out with the flu. My starting PT/ backup DE/LB at ggrandmas 95th birthday reunion party, my starting LG/backup DT twin of my RT- out with the flu. I have this LE who has come on real strong, his 3rd year in program, never been a starter until this year- he rotates with 3 other kids at LE about evenly- but he is the best one. He is a backup not great body control and only 75 lbs but gives great effort and blocks to the whistle on EVERY play- coachable. Been very encouraging to this one- he won a “strong link” early on to his AND his moms surprise, won our ‘perseverance” Foundation rock. Well I practiced him some at PT this week and he started there. He and my backup/ now starting RT- did a GREAT job of neutralizing #88, a 150 lb STUDDT that our sister team couldn’t block last week.
We kept them off balance. Couldn’t wedge – DIDN’T EVEN HAVE IT ON THE WRISTBANDS this week- because of 2-4 STUD BCs- 1 of them ILLEGALLY grabbing our guards ankles- which he WAS CALLED for in the 3rd quarter. Noticed they werent grabbing and getting into 3s rather than 4s- wedged 4 times for about 40 yards to close the game out in 4th quarter. Our kids must have watched way too much of the NU game on Saturday (NU had 7 dropped passes- 3 were sure TDs) – we dropped 2 SURE TDs. We also had the dagger in the heart play- 16 pass- WIDE open for another score- the LB reacted at the last second- cant believe he got there, jumped up ala Jordan, tipped it and then caught it. Had the ball been thrown 1 inch higher – we may have won by 3 TDs. When we scored the clinching TD- it was 8-6, now 14-6 we went of 1 instead of the kick. Our kicker has been very good but is rookie- they had their PAT block team out- had to sub in- we had kicked all our PATs so far this year. They were selling out the off-tackle- we ran sweep- scored with a 4th year player.
The other team scored with 36 seconds left- but were down by 9. They onside kicked- we did an excellent job of recovering. Got out without any major injuries- the backups did a great job. The LG that started- rookie kid just 95 LBs- the rest of my linemen are nice sized. 135, 155, 150,- the twins they replaced weigh maybe 135-140 etc- What saved us- working the heck out of those backups and not panicking when we had all the personnel issues.
Film was HUGE- HUDL unreal resource. Some of my kids had watched 2 hours of the other teams game film- I had it chopped to about 15 minutes- Hudl tells you how much time each player watched. We had play cards on all their plays and ran the heck out of them in practice. We saw they liked a wheel play on certain down and distance/field position etc, they hit it for a score last weekend. They were 0-3 with it against us and we got a pick. They also had a real nifty handoff to the HB where he usually throws to a streaking TE- but I saw it would be really easy to toss it back to the QB- they hadn’t shown it. We practiced against it- and we had 3 guys on the QB when he looped back to go out- incomplete.
We have to win the semi- final game to make it to the Super Bowl- was very proud of how our kids played- handled the adversity. We did lose an Int and fumble, this was the most aggressive ball hawking team Ive seen in 10 years. We now have 6 turnovers for the season. We had about 40 yards in penalties- which is high for us as well. We tackled very well, maybe one missed tackle in the game.
