We are a team that is depleted right now as a whole. Looking for some solutions of what to do. We are playing the best ones we have right now. Trying to keep as many as we can from going both ways but its beginning to look like if we dont bring up any JV players we will have to go that route. What do we do...HEEEEEELLLLPPPP! ha ha

Try to get the best players on the field so that you have a chance to win. If someone has to play both ways than thats what you have to do.

We have lost our top 2 offensive players. RB & QB ... which means we have now had to move 2 of our starting receivers to fill those positions. Somehow, through a myriad of smoke and mirrors - plus a group of very resilient & coachable kids - we are 5-1.
Thank goodness we have a sound system & program. We have a very solid base/core series of schemes from which we can rely on. While we don't get to very many of our "cool" plays, we are able to motion/formation/shift our way around our base series and make it work. We really are managing games well and our defense is playing lights out.
How much longer can we last? Who knows, but we'll ride her 'til she dies....

Your worried about 2 way players!?? Man I wish I had that luxury when I was coaching. I'd say 8/11 defensive players were starters on offense for us lol. Try to get them blows when you can, get your 150lb sophmore to play Nose when you got 3rd and 25.

Cross train...we're very low on skill position players.
I have two HBs who know how to play all skill positions including HB...and a FB who can play HB. I also have a TE who plays both TE and tackle.

I wish it were that easy fellas.. While I do commend my kids for putting up the effort and fighting. Its just not looking good. We as a staff have shuffled players around and around week in and out. Nothing is seeming to work like it did when we were starting out with our fresh un-injured team. Granted we weren't very good then, when we had those guys, but we really look like junk now.
Just an insight on our injury situation.
first game of the season our WR/TE: out for the year knee injury. third game WR/RB: out for the year ACL fifth game RB/LB (best player on the team): out 4-5 weeks fractured fibla. sixth game OT: knee injury out 2 weeks seventh game WR: out a week concussion seventh game back up QB/WR/DB/long snapper/you name it: out for the season broken collarbone.
Its just an uphill climb for us. Injuries are apart of the game I am aware of this. I'm thinking we don't lift enough as a team, like we use to and that's where all the injuries are coming from. Simply because we are not in shape enough to sustain the blows were are taking...we play in a very physical conference.

The Number One reason for lifting weights is injury avoidance. Making kids better athletes-football players is second.
Do you continue to lift in-season? As example, we lift Mondays and Wednesdays after practice (no STC classes during school day).

blb, I know. Thats what I'm saying at the school were at last year, thats what we did. but now its like we watch film or run. Instead of lifting and running. Dont get me wrong, I love that we watch film, but i also think we should be lifting more.

The thing that we looked at as a solution to depth this season was to do something a little different with our defense. We knew we would be outmatched up front just about every game, so rather than fight it, we went with it. We run a slanting 3-4 and use tiny kids on the defensive line. Many of them are kids that just aren't good enough to play anywhere else. When we get to the offensive portion of practice, they keep working defensive drills, so they get extra technique work. We roll these kids in and out of the game based on D&D and field position. We have a sub chart based on situation. When it's 3rd and short or the other team is in the red zone, we sub them out. But through the course of the game they play a ton of snaps and give our big guys a blow. We probably play 12 different kids at our 3 DL positions through the course of the game. The keys to this are the extra practice time they get, and having a coach specifically assigned to handling the sub chart during the game. We literally have 130 pound freshmen with double digits in tackles this season playing on the D line. We've been able to wear teams out in the 4th quarter in part thanks to this system.

Given the choice between having the kids lift or watch film I'll take lifting 100 times out of 100.

We watch opponent film for half hour after ours on Sunday, then another half hour before dressing for game on Friday. That's enough for us.
If lifting in-season is important to you (and it should be) find time. Takes us only 20-30 minutes after practice Monday and Wednesday.
Strength Training only in off-season is like studying in January for Calculus test in September.

Dacoordinator, do you guys have a Saturday practice? Our guys lift Saturday and Monday. They also watch film both of those days. Previous game's film on Saturday and opponent's film on Monday. Other than that we just do a walk through of the game plan on Monday. So they get in 2 lifts, have plenty of recovery time, and still get to watch film. Plus our Monday practice is short, which the kids like. A Saturday session is certainly something to think about for next season if you guys don't do it currently.

We don't do Saturdays. With our schedule-three Thursday games and two Saturdays- it's hard to do. On a normal week for us we lift on Monday (Plus film and game plan) and Thursday (Review). Before you ask lifting the day before the game has been no problem.

It makes me laugh when someone complains about kids going both ways and having a lack of depth. Try coaching in a rural setting and having 19 players grades 9-12! I would love to be able to pull kids up from JV or even have a JV team. Our JV is our Varsity. We have only 3 seniors which is good for future. This is our second season at this school and we are trying to build the program. Progress has been slow but moving in the right direction.
Not trying to disrespect anyone. Each situation is different. Right now I can only wish I had your problem.

I don't know how your classification system is set up ... maybe your 19 players are playing other teams with roughly about the same population size so depth becomes relative or about the same for you and your opponent. However, we are a school that plays teams nearly twice our size in our own league. so, depth is of more concern to us than it is to, say, another team. while our depth is much better than yours, our problems are still relative because of the increased depth of our opponents. I imagine many other of the people in this thread 'complaining' about their depleted depth are in a similar circumstance as us.

No we do not have Saturday practices. We just have a 4th period weight lifting class, where most of the supposedly "weight lifting" and film watching gets done. We practice Mon. - Thurs. those days are long at the beginning of the season, but have been shortening up.

All the teams in our area have depth problems, some pretty damn good teams are only carrying about 25-28 players. And some of these are schools with 1,200-1,300 kids. It's crazy. I think it's because the mimimum GPA requirement to play has been raised (dramatically) in our conference. But two real great programs (same size, about 1,200 kids in each) have about 120 players from Freshman, JV and Varsity combined. It's a tremendous advantage for them. We have depth issues coming into the final week, and we need a win to make the playoffs. It's going to be tough. Good luck to you guys fighting the depth battle, too.
