Guys, Just got done playing a real physical battle on Friday night. We turn around and play Thursday. Our kids are sore and beat- up. In order to get the freshest group of young men for Thursday, I was going to give them a 45 minute practice tomorrow with no gear. Review specials, 15 plays scripted O and the opponents top 15 call on defense. Get them there in gym apparel, try to get them to get some energy back for Thursday. Question is, how many of you will almost sacrifice a practice late in the season just to have a hungry group on game day? Are we putting ourselves in a tough spot heading into Thursday? Thanks!

You have a better pulse than the rest of us. By this time at the Varsity level, most of the hay is in the barn anyway with regards to contact.

I know several coaching staffs that do this: During region/conference play, they will not only cut back practice, but give their guy the whole day off. Usually it is verses some patsy, but it allows the kids to reenergize, get caught up on school work, coaches can go see their familites, etc....

I think its a great idea, sometimes we as coaches forget how it feels to be beat up and having to strap it on in practice. Still expected to go full speed to get perfect reps. Even though the kids can re-up faster than the pro's. They still need a significant time to recover from physical games.

We started cutting back a little this week. I think we need to cut more. Do you do this regardless of wins?

We've cut back a ton in the last two weeks. Tuesday is still a full 2.5 hour practice. Lately Wendsday has been about an hour and a half.

By the last 1/3 of the season it "should" be more mental than physical. Hopefully their bodies are trained by this point.

To those of you who cut practice time to be more mental what does your practice schedule look like? My OL have been doing the same things pretty much day in day out but I was wondering what practice would look like if I started cutting out some of their contact to be me more mental and freshen them up. We run a small amount of plays (Belly, Down, Rocket, Trap, Ctr, not much else) and execution has not really been a problem (knock on wood) so I was wondering what i would do with my time since its not like they need a ton of time on this stuff.

- cut a few minutes out of each period - DON'T cut back on the intensity, if anything be more intense - plan/script out each period in detail, including who the scout teams will be, where they will be, and what they will be doing (nothing kills a period when you have to holler for Jimmy and try to find out where he is when you are short on time) - tell the kids up front what you are doing (for them) and what you expect to get from them.
Pre practice 10 min Flex 5 SAQ 7 team pass 10 (good on good) special team/indy 10 (2 teams/day vs scouts) Indy 10 Group 0 (used to be 10) Team Run/play action 10 (good on good) Screens/Tackle curcuit and/or pursuit 10 Run Group/WR&DB 1-1 10 Perimeter 10 Team vs scout 10 2nd and 8 best of 5 (good on good)

As a baseball coach (long season), during the latter part of the season I gave the players 1 day per week off. I wanted them concentrating on homework, studying, etc., and getting away from baseball.....I didn't even want the m to look at a glove, ball, or bat. Conversely, on the football side I'm not sure I could give them a day totally off - especially with a shortened week by 1 day. We may only watch film and/or review the scouting report/game-plan, or divide and do group meetings/chalk-talks if it is a large team with several coaches - as 1 option. However, as an alternative to the aforementioned (or more accurately in my case afterward the film session/chalk-talk) I would have a shortened practice in girdles/helmets/shoulder pads (to protect from injuries). We would run through all the special teams, practice the O plan, and the D plan/coverages/stunts/blitzes/play recognition. About 30-45 minutes in each phase of the game would suffice, for me. I know it is too late for the person who posed the dilemma, but maybe this will serve as an idea for others in the future.
