Today we beat 12-0 the only other team we'd expected to be competition for the Warriors Pee-Wee crown, the Spartans. The Spartans didn't lose for lack of diligence or desire; at practice the previous day it was drizzly but their whole team or nearly so showed up, while we had only 3 Blue Devils! However, the Spartans may have had even less concentration on basics than we had, because in the game they were trying to get fancy with formations and quick plays, but killing themselves with false starts and misexecutions.
Our DL was just dominant, and our pursuit to the sidelines was adequate. Meanwhile on offense our best play was once again our Busted Special. That's where we miss a handoff and our QB keeps, picks up blocks (which we have some players who are fairly good at in the open field) and trucks everyone on their defense. Unfortunately on one of those TDs he got hurt and had to miss the remainder of the first half. We also had superior kicking, including about a 45 yard net punt because the teams don't take full advantage of the special rules by putting enough players deep, so it went over the deepest Spartan's head and bounced and rolled for extra.
Some players were missing for odd reasons. A Spartan was out for a 1 game suspension for throwing his helmet at the ground the previous week. (It's not just unsportsmanlike. The helmets belong to the Warriors club, and an empty helmet is more fragile than you might think.) The Blue Devils have someone out because of a concussion which we now believe did occur during practice. A Blue Devil came late for pre-game and so had to sit out the first half, but then I was told he had to sit the whole game. I asked AC Brutus, and he explained on the QT that the player's dues hadn't been paid, but that we didn't want to embarrass him by explaining it to him then. And finally, during a break one of the Spartans got stung on the lip by a bee that'd gotten into his drink cup!
So we're undefeated, untied, unscored on, are finished with the toughest part of our schedule...and still stink! We just have players who are fast & strong and mostly pay att'n and play against opponents whose fundamentals are just as bad or worse. And we love it! They're a great bunch to work with. And from here on, we get only 1 practice a week, from 5 PM until dark, and many of the players can't get there until 5:30. And considering that our season runs to Nov. 20, and Daylight Saving Time ends the first Sun. in Nov., that means for our last 2 games we'll have no practice at all.
