As I stood at practice yesterday I started to wonder how much other teams hit? How much do you hit in indy? How much in Team O/D?

ol- at the level im at we HAVE TO HIT at least twice a week or the kids get scared and soft. they just dont have enough contact football under their belts to warrant any less hitting. they have to overcome their fears. we dont do much live scrimmaging though.

we go full speed on everything to a point
we thud up on our backs and try to light thud on qb's on qb runs
other than that, 3 days a week full speed until the end of the season where we will tone it down some on wed

I try to incorporate "contact" in everything that we do. I used the word contact because sometimes it could be just popping and wrapping up the ball carrier in pass skel.
In indy we are full contact as well as in Team O/D with the exception of the day before a game when we pop/wrap.

I am struggling with this right now. We go pretty hard, these year I feel like we got run down and underachieved in the playoffs.

Thursday walk-thru. When we are ON THE FIELD, EVERYTHING is full-speed. NO 3/4 or 1/2 speed. We do all the talking and walking in pre practice and film sessions. We do fundamental tackling for no less than 5 minutes every day, even on game day.

Same as most of the other guys.
We hit all the time, QB even takes full hits.
We are a running team and don't want to lose that attitude, fundamentals, and we want our QB to toughen up (he's running so he isn't a sitting duck)

We go full speed on everything to a point. (I think someone mentioned that already). When we get into the playoffs the 1st two rounds are Tuesday-Saturday so we try and get some hitting on there on Thursday but have quick whistles. Once the season gets going we thud the backs and recievers during team time.

Booku hitting- every chance we get. Thud on the backs, light thud on QBs during indies, inside run, outside run, team. I also do tackling stations almost every single day, for at least one 10 minute period- those almost always full contact. In my first three years in HS, we hit every single day and I loved it. My senior year, we turned over coaching staffs and the new staff was terrified of injuries. We did virtually no hitting during practice; we became real soft, real quick. I hated going to practice because I was always in trouble. We were supposed to be doing all of our drills at 50% and I was teeing off every chance I got. I spent more practice time running around the field.....

Monday - Walk and Talk...later in the year when we questioned their manhood we went full go Tuesday - Full go on everyone except QB (he was not to even receive a finger nail touching him). As the DC, I had problems with that b/c I was willing to compromise and at least wrap him up. How can I get a good feel if we are containing him if all my defensive players are slowing down within 3 yards of the QB? Wednesday - Full go on everyone except QB (see Tuesday) Thursday - Thud and wrap, but again see Monday's note
Our OC wanted the RB's tackled, which I had no problem with. They had to learn how to take a hit and keep a leg drive. The QB issue aggrevated me at times, especially when the HC would holler that the QB scrambled for a first time and I would bite my tongue knowing that if my defensive guys weren't scared of running extra for coming near the QB he would have been tackled or sacked. I'm big into the psychology of things and I felt that if my players constantly let up when going after the QB 4 days a week, that learned behavior would find its way into the game.

anybody read gagliardi's book -- I know it's college - but there are also some references about Minnesota high school coaches he has influenced - very little "full go" during the season.

i like one day per week of full-throttle. i call it "bloody tuesday" and our kids look forward to it. indy and team are live (thud on qb). we do full speed tackling drills that day and really get after each other. the rest of the week we go uppers. i feel that sometimes our kids get too caught up in the physicality aspect that it interferes with learning. we are not soft by any means.... we actually have some heavy hitters. but my system is that the kids know what is expected of them each day. so the days we dont hit they know everything still has to be full speed... its not a "day off" just cause we are in helmets/shoulderpads and shorts. during camp is when we hammer home the physical aspects, so tuesdays are just so we dont get rusty... we keep our edge. but the rest of the time im more concerned about reps, reps, and more reps. if i have to worry about our ol+dl tangling up ankles.. or our running back (6-2 230) crushing my sophomore scout team db in a full speed drill.... the learning takes a back seat. we can get all our work done in uppers alone, so that what we do

After scouting report on Mondays we go full-go through Indy, group and team. Tuesdays are full go also with less Indy time and more group. Wednesdays we go in shells with thud, more team than indy or group. Thursdays are game-like situations (Kick-Return, 1st O runs 8-10 plays and scores, PAT, Kick off, 1st team D, 3 and out, Punt return, etc.) in shells. Friday games, Sat morn films.
I was very concerned about injuries this year, especially O-line, but didn't want to be soft. I think Beating the tar out of each other early in the week and tapering off kept us healthy (lost only 1 kid this year).

Their is a coach in Oklahoma that has over 300 wins that doesn't hit at all, rarely practices defense, and gives cookies and pop after most practices. I thought it wasn't true but I have asked a bunch of people that know him and they all swear it is true. I guess whatever works.

defense hit the crap out of each other. we put caveman types on defense. offense, we rarely hit. do nto have to hit when you are a passing team. oline are agressive on pass pro but that is it.
when teams are beat up at the end of the season, our kids are still fresh. one thing i have noticed being a passing team, you do not get the nicks and scrapes which running teams do. you do not get the sparined ankles as well. still I do think smash mouth teams kids are more physical but who needs to be physcial when you can throw a 70 yd td pass.
